Usenet groups?

39 posts in this topic

Just wondering if anyone would recommend any decent similarly-topiced usenet groups out there that aren't filled with lusers or spam.

Serious inquiries only.

Are alt.2600.*, alt.hackers.*, comp.sec.* etc... still worth looking at? Any less-public servers?

I subscribe to mostly comp.lang.* groups, most are spam free, thankfully. Not sure if there are any "hacker" ones.

Mostly I only use newsgroups for media anymore (alt.ebooks.technical is awsome). But some of the 2600/phreaking ones are still descent. People like lucky225 and Bizurke still check those regularly it seems, and will answer your questions.

I'm trying to get back into it. Spam is still quite a problem out there though. So is attitude. I noted that the most active "hacker" group on newsgroups seems to be "alt.hackers.malicious." Why not just "Alt.hackers." I dunno.

Some groups won't die, though. alt.smokers.pipes (TOBACCO PIPES!) is still the same. talk.bizzarre is good for wierd haikus.

Any good hacks for usenet? You can sometime's catch a spammer on alt.test before he unleashes his crap to the usenet at large, sometimes they have not yet turned off their real email address.

Last time I checked all the 2600 channels were filled with porn and ads. There are very few good channels out there.

Well, your timing is interesting in starting this thread, as I just discovered using nzb files to leech binaries off of newsgroups with. To make what could be a long paragraph short, let's say that I decided to begin posting binrev, hpr, twatech, rfa mp3's out there. I made an announcemet to alt.hackers as well as alt.2600 and comp.hackers and alt.cyberpunk (hey, an old favorite.)

Alt.hackers will not have any spam, I found out that it is marked as a moderated newsgroup, and the moderator has abandoned it. So if you read that group, you will only see posts by people like me.

Don't confuse alt.hackers with the unmoderated alt.hacker though.

BTW, alt.hackers.malicious looks like a bunch of crossposts to alt.2600.

Well, just my two cents,

The first rule of Usenet is ... YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT USENET

Well , around here it's ok. I'm just afraid the general public will find out about it and ruin it.

Anytime someone asks where I get all those cool apps/unreleased movies etc... I never tell them.

Not that I want to be a dick , but I need my binaries , and too many noobs would just screw up a good thing.

And , yeah , nzbs are the way to go. Loading up 5 million headers takes freaking forever.

Which Usenet provider are you using for binaries?

Giganews.

Yeah , you have to pay, but its worth it.

Unlimited d/l , 10 concurrent connections via ssl, 90+ day retention> 35 bucks a month.

Never having to worry about RIAA/MAFIA or having to wait a week for something to d/l > priceless.

Oh , and nice reference, jedibebop. Didnt know that one. Of course AOL didnt give access to the binaries as far as I remember, and thats what I want to keep the kazaa/limewire users away from.

There are free NNTP servers on the IPv6 network that carry binaries. I'd suggest checking them out and get yourself ready for the transition.

oooh, KuiperBeltObject is going to hate me.

I am working on a HPR about binary downloading off of newsgroups.

I really hate it when people think usenet is just for binaries. I feel like I'm the only one who actually uses it for discussion anymore :(

I enjoy reading the comp. and rec. forums. To me, it's funny to see how easily a flame war starts in those groups.

How can I use an IPv6 service, as I am still on an IPv4 network?

rec.arts.comics.creative still kicks ass, but yeah actual discussion on newsgroups is getting hard to come by anymore. Web forums have have made usenet outdated.

Suicide Squid for life, bitches.

I also believe it is useful, but the spam is making the Usenet less interesting. Maybe a ban of Google Groups will help things a little bit. But it is not very practical. Google itself has to do something about the abusing of their service.

Use a tunnelbroker. There is Hexago, HE.net and Sixxs. Too bad BTExact went away because I thought they were pretty tight. Sixxs is run by a bunch of french nazis. Hexago is in Canada and HE.net is on the west coast.

The first rule of... ah nevermind. I just hope it never breaches the surface of the general publics consciousness. I fear it would go the way of Napster.

Usenet is usually the 2nd or 3rd place I'll go to if I am looking for a solution to a problem. Most people dont even know about it, and if they cant find it in a google web search , they give up. I've been using usenet for troubleshooting for 15 years. I was bummed when google bought the usenet archives from dejanews years ago as that was my "secret" place to get answers noone else could find. It's not just binaries , but it is the BEST place for binaries.

TANSTAAFL (there aint no such thing as a free lunch)

Free means few groups , days instead of months of retention, and slooooow d/l. If you like d/l stuff just for the hell of it, which I do, do yourseld a favor and pony up a few bucks, you wont regret it.

This site has great info on usenet and getting started. If you decide to jump in , good luck. Usenet has the very best and very worst you can ever hope to find on the internet.

Either :

If you are in the US > https://www.easynews.com/signup.phtml?

And do the 900 number option. All kinds of possibilities with a beige box...

Or send in a money order

Or get a prepaid credit card.
