Linux in a Mac

8 posts in this topic

Heya! I got Linux running in my PowerBook! Had trouble getting Mandrake to regcognize my Airport (wi-fi) card, so I put Yellow Dog 2.3 (essentially Red Hat 7.3) on and got it working. So, I'm posting this from my PowerBook, running Linux, using Galeon (first time), wireless. Feels kinda funky, but in a good way! :jigga2:

Gonna start playing with file sharing next......

I've got my Airport card working under Yellow Dog Linux (which is basically Red Hat ported for use on a Mac). Couldn't get it to work in Mandrake PPC. Still trying to figure it all out though, as far as getting it to work on networks other than my own. They way I did it, I entered my SSID into one of the config files, but now I can't get onto any other network. Oh wait....getting on someone else's network is a BAD thing. Shame on me. I'm a little spoiled by just choosing a network from the Airport icon in the menu bar.

I agree with mut3....it's more for the coolness factor. Between my OS X apps and running all the *nix apps under X11, I can do everything I need to in OS X. For me, running Linux on my lappy is more for the learning and experience and the phun. Haven't gotten the nerve to put it on any of my desktops. I take that back. I have Mandrake on an old Performa 6400, but I don't really use it for much since I set up a server on my old G4 running OS X Server.

I'm guessing that Apple will put out new 15" PowerBooks "RealSoonNow". The TiBooks are getting a little long in tooth and they need to be brought up to par with the 12" and 17" aluminum models. Mmmmmmm....lighted keyboard......mmmmmmm. It's getting close to being time to uprade my 3 year old G3/400 PowerBook. ^_^
