Recommendations for open source apps?

11 posts in this topic

Other than GIMP and OpenOffice, I'm not too familiar with what open source apps would be comparable to the commercial stuff I use everyday. I'd like to find some open source equivalents to stuff like Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Illustrator, Quark Xpress, and anything for digital video editing. I'm really curious how an open source counterpart would compare to some of the commercial stuff I use, so I'm looking for some recommendations........

great list! I only wish it had a little one or two sentence blurb about each one or list of strengths/weaknesses.

My next box will be an attempt at a complete windows open source box. I just installed mandrake over my redhat box to try some linux packages on.

They both use RPM so that should not be a problem..

One thing you may want to check out is knoppix.. that distro r0cks, I use on my girlfriends lappy all the time (its either that or use XP pro), the only thing I dont like is that it mounts everything read only.. it has a interesting assortment of software as well.

well, knoppix has a HD install, that I am pretty sure is not read only. The CD boot is read only of course, since technically it loads into a temporary RAMDISK anyway.

Listen to the last RFA (www.oldskoolphreak.com) for a review of knoppix 3.2 by dual.

oh, and welcome to the forums! :) I checked last night b4 bed, and was up-to-date, but when I checked this morning, someone had gang-banged my forums overnight! Welcome aboard, now GET SOME SLEEP!!! :monk:

I assume leeboy is referring to the windows parrtition being mounted read only? You should be able to change and edit config files for knoppix while its loaded into RAM. The reason its mounting the windows partition ro is because there isn't currently any working write support for the ntfs file system, which is most likely what your gf's xp laptop is using.

Ya, its becuase ntfs fs threads are currently unsupported nd would most likly mess up the file system itself if wrote to... hence the use of her USB floppy drive for saving files.

I heard that 2.5.x had full support however.. know of any truth in that?
