Power Macintosh 5260/100

10 posts in this topic

I just had a Power Macintosh 5260/100 with no hard drive, no keyboard, and no mouse thrown at me. So I did my best to catch it and took it home.

I did some research and found its specs here:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powe...c_5260_100.html

It uses a IDE based hard drive. I don't think getting one will be a problem for me but I do think size may be a issue. Will I have any trouble using a bigger then 1 gig drive in this? If I knew the hardware limitations on a mac for max hard drive size it would really help.

On the back it has a internal network adapter. I'm happy with that.

I'm not sure what to 'do' with this. But I want to get it working if it can be done. What are the best mac places on the web to get parts? Where do I get a older copy of a mac os? My research says this will take 9.1 if I can find it but 8 is ok as well.

If you get OS 9.1 on it, there's lots of stuff you can do with that system. You could even install a PPC Linux distro if you were so inclined.

As for sources of parts, here's a few that I have used in the past:

http://www.shrevesystems.com/

http://www.nexcomp.com/

http://www.macsales.com/ (aka Other World Computing)

And of course, Ebay.

Other World Computing has an OS 9.1 CD with no box or docs for $40. Again, there is always Ebay.

I'd install the marathon games. Not only are they shining examples of mac-only gaming, they have the most in-depth plot of any FPS ever.

So I could use a 40gig hard drive if I so wished?

If I had the hardware addressing information (Its 64bit on the bus but the motherboard is only 32bit) and the ide limits that would be nice. From what I can find out it's considered broken on this model. Anyone with experience who would be willing to tell me the max hd size they have gotten working would be helping me allot.

Sorry, but it won't work on a Mac running pre-OS X OS. The RC5-72 project doesn't have a client for older Macs.

PF

Belgarath: I've never tried to stuff a larger HDD in an older Mac. Sorry I'm not much help.

I'm not a mac person, thanks for letting me know, I just said that cause the mac at compusa is doing d.net for me.

I downloaded Yellow Dog Linux onto my fileserver yesterday just in case. But I would rather have a authentic apple operating system on it out of geek love for authenticity.

When I get the time I will see about getting a hard drive for it. Till then it's just going to sit here like all my other hardware.

Sigh.

Here's another link you might find useful:

http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/5260.shtml

Low End Mac is a great site for info on older Macs.

You should be OK putting a 40GB drive in it, but since it's a really slow machine with only a 40Mhz bus speed and max RAM of 32MB, it's probably overkill.

Thanks!

Now all I need to worry about getting is a decent macintosh keyboard/mouse so I can see if this thing will even boot.
