Free Hardware.

95 posts in this topic

The annoying voice that sometimes feels like invading my head and smugly taking a hand in things suggested today my tower would look better if I cleaned out my lab. Actually it suggested I sell or give away any parts I feel I either do not need, can't use, or don't remember the use of as I will soon need the extra space.

As any of you who have read my self titled book knows the voice has always had a good reason for these suggestions, not that he would spoil its fun and tell me the reason for them outright. I'm just not one to sell old computer parts.

So when I'm done I will have a list of parts I will give away for free*. This seems the best way to me as then I no longer have these parts calling to me or threatening to return to my collection uninvited. I also think this will be a effective way to let my better hardware know that once there years of service for me is over they will still be loved and not simply used and tossed aside. It is my hope this will create a better work environment.

So if your willing to pay the postage for items I don't need, want, or know how to use anymore please post in this thread and tell me what your most interested in, why, and the max your willing to spend on shipping. Be in depth.

Please keep in mind I’m not giving away 60 gig hard drives or 2ghz cpu’s. I do however have other things like monochrome monitors, some very old hard drives, A (AT) computer case/mobo combo, a couple power supplies, and a AT&T ESS Monitor that I have already added to my list.

Remember It's free*. So dont expect anything really high-end or expensive unless your a geek and go for pre 2k hardware.

*You pay shipping. I’m not that nice.

Additionally:

The entire Gmail ‘me too’ flood of new members who did so just to get a gmail invite got me thinking. So I am going to add this to the rules in order to make sure the hardware I give away finds a good, quality home and has a owner that loves it enough to take good care of it:

]You must have been a member of this forum for at least 2 months to qualify. Exceptions can be made by me. But only if your post count is above 50 and at least 49 have all been quality posts, and a ddp staff member vouches for you.

I'm making the list now. I will post it minus the few items I am holding in reserve for my brother when I'm done.

I urge all of you to do the same.

Hmm, looks like I've been a member of the board for two months, to the day. Awsome. Somehow, the combonation of being a poor college student and having a real passioin for old crap keeps the 8 megs of computer memory that I've got fireing away. I eagerly anticipate the list.

Ok last night I did some searching around my place and found several boxes worth of stuff. Whiteraven chipped in a few items as well but they are higher end and he wants to sell them cheap rather then give them away. Like a Sparc IPC Workstation ( No cables. No network card. Just the Unit - Just as he got it, he never used it he says. Shipping plus 10-20 bucks)

I don't feel comfortable selling parts I don't know work. I hate the idea that somebody could shell out money and not get something useful. So the list itself will take a while to make in full. I figure this project of mine will be ongoing with the list getting bigger as I add items to it and smaller as I ship items out.

I also have my geeky need to keep everything I can to deal with. Parting is such sweet sorrow. :(

I'm currently building a computer out of parts for testing. Let me give you all a idea of what I have:

I have a large stack of old hard drives to test then extract any data I need from before I zero them out. This will be done before I add them to the stack of hard drives to get rid of. Nothing special. I remember a 85meg and a 200meg among others for example.

I know I have several monitors I need to get rid of. Including one that is the old style of pinouts, works but has the pins bent out of shape on the connector. I don't have the tools to fix it but I’m sure if one of you wanted you could bend them back.

I also found some old software on original floppies and original 5.25 inch floppy disks. I found a box of this type of software all with original labels. No warez. Word 5.1 on original 5.25 floppy from the Word Corporation for example, also allot of PROLOG and old database stuff.

My entire living space has boxes and bins of computer parts I never use anymore in it. I also have a closet full of old computers just stacked like porn should be in the corner.

I have a large stack of optical drives I need to sort through as well. All are cd-rom no cdrw. I know for a fact I have a 8x in it I want to get rid of. I plan to get rid of anything under 30x in speed.

I have a large pile of RAM I need to go through. Most of it is SIMM’s.

I have a box here of old (socket 3,7) motherboards and a few Pentium 1 CPU’s. Some even without MMX support.

Several random cards with pci, agp and ISA slots, including one motherboard so old the video card I have for it is over a foot long.

I have a rough group of old apple parts including a few ram sticks. Not really sure what I have that is apple based but Whiteraven added a few items to the mix.

I have a drawer full of old power supplies. AT and ATX .

Several Old Computer cases (Aluminum)

Just lots of stuff. It's going to take me forever to list it all. So I think due to my innate laziness this will be a ongoing project as I said.

I just found 5 monitors in the extra bedroom while looking for the AT&T monitor with the funny cable I am told is a ESS Monitor. I'm not sure how many work but the list includes a original Tandy SVGA Monitor part number 25-1024A.

http://support.radioshack.com/support_accessories/6011.htm

My living room is starting to look like the computer geek version of the tower of Babel. So I insist I get rid of the extra monitors first. I will test them tonight.

When I find that AT&T Monitor You have dibs on it phreakblaze.

It doesn't work like that. I f I knew what I had or had enough for full systems that had the power to be useful I would either use them myself or donate them to a blind and needy person via AFB since I have family connections to them. What I'm trying to do now is give a few people who have a working system except for one hard to find part a chance to get that unit working. I also hope that by doing so I can get out of putting around 30 ounces of lead per monitor unit into the environment by throwing them away.

If you don't have the skills to make hardware work without any manuals then this is not for you. That is why I put it in 'General Hacking'.

I don't have the hardware to test the CM-11 Tandy made Commodore monitor I have. But it is in great condition on the outside. Anyone need it?

Is anyone interested in old 5.25 floppy based software?

I'm having trouble getting the hardware together to test the rest of the monitors but I do have 2 here that work outside of the bent connection cables. Anyone need one?

I'm still looking for that monitor. I think It’s hiding in my back room under another pile of hardware I haven’t had the time to go through.

/* Monitors Tested So Far */

"AST SVGA" on front.

Model: CMC-1412AD

Maker: Leading Edge.

Condition: Working expect for bent pin on connector plug.

I used this same monitor for one of my first computers back when win95 was new.

"Tandy RGB High resolution color monitor CM-11" On front and back.

Model No.: 25-1024A

Condition: Looks great, pins on video connector cable are perfect. As with pinout on info posted above slot 7 is empty since it's not used.

I lack the hardware to test this monitor but it had been donated to a church before I got it. While they could not test it I doubt somone is going to give a church a non-working monitor

"Samsung" on front.

Model No.: CVL4955

Condition: Looks great and I just tested it on a computer running XP. The picture shows up but the screen is out of sync since that computer normaly has a much better monitor connected to it set to a higher frame rate and resolution.(it's a amd3000+ based system I tested it with.)

The color showed up great.

This would make a perfect console terminal screen or in a pinch a main screen. Just set the correct refresh rate.

"SAMTRON" on front.

Model No.: SC-428VS

Condition: Same as above.

2 Junk/Broken Monitors: You need one for parts let me know. Other then that its not worth your time or money for shipping to get them. I will keep them for a couple days only in case any of you wants them for the CTR and any death ray projects you may or not be working on.

I have a large stack of SIMM ram in front of me. It’s just very old. I will let you know if I find any with the correct timings and capacity.

I doubt I have any ULTRASPARC 32 meg DIMM sticks I'm not already using. But you get dibs if I do. ;)

Anyone up for the monitors above? Once some are out of the way I will have the room to go through the other stuff.

I noticed you mentioned you had some "old apple stuff"....I'm in dire need of a 6800 processor, preferably one of the ceramic (not the plastic) models. Is your apple stuff old enough that one of them would by chance have a 6800, or are they newer than that?

I am in need of a few things:

1) zip drive one that will fit in a 3.5 bay

2) floppy drive also fit in a 3.5 bay

3) I dont _need_ but I would like to get my hands on a 8-24x cd drive or a 8x dvd drive.

4) A good sturdy keyboard that isnt to 'sticky' sticky meaning the keys are easy to press, also Id like to get one without all the internet buttons...

ERROR!

 lol

I thought that was redheads! Mine's a brunette too. I know what you mean. :)

Let me know if you have any ATX PSUs left, or any SIMMs/DIMMs. Before college let out I had a small group of guys get together at my house and "did computer stuff" as my wife would put it. I'd let them pick through my parts so they could augment their boxes, or build new ones. It seems like PSUs, RAM and NICs were the most sought after parts.

Sorry, can't do any more monitors.

I'm not sure. I'm trying to get the big stuff out first so I have room to go through the rest. If I don't get any PM's about the monitors I posted about above by the 13th I'm making a donation to the local Animal Shelter Thrift Store.

Then consider them gone for future requests. I'm in a hurry now. I have a women who want's to come visit me from Virginia and I dont want my geekdome to be too self evident.

Besides if I don't get rid of some hardware I would'nt have any room for her.

I haven't gotten any request for the monitors so I gave one away locally. I will be ebaying the commodore monitor, and will be donating the others piled behind me to the local animal shelter thrift store. Maybe they can get a few bucks for them and help out the cats and dogs.

As for everything else:

I have many psu’s and more of everything else. I just need to go through it and get rid of it. I need to hurry up, tonight I turned off the season premier of StarGate Atlantis so we could talk on the phone before she went to bed. I feel so ashamed, but I really don't care either.

Once the pile is gone I will recreate it with other parts. Then I will see what I have in that batch and so on. I'm going to be up early anyway due to work for the next week. May as well make good use of that time.

I still have not found that ATT monitor. I think it may have run off somehow
