wifi + knoppix = disaster

6 posts in this topic

i got the new knoppix to work on ly lappy, the only problem is that i have an 802.11b network in my house, and I can't get knoppix to recognize my bargain basement belkin card. Also, i'm using ms network to connect my boxes. So my question is twofold. First, what do i need to get my wireless network to work on knoppix, and what is the fastest way to get my boxes connected?

thanks guys

Hey bland,

Have you been able to use it with another linux distribution?

Hmm, Knoppix should recognize Prism2s with no problem. I'll do some testing and get back to ya.

Ok, I'm posting this using KNOPPIX_V3.1-2003-01-20 and a Belkin F5D6020. During boot-up you should see cardmgr find an Intersil 11 Mbps card and then modprobe hermes, orinoco and orinoco_cs. Did any of this happen? And if so, is your WAP handing out IPs?

this is probably the problem. when i load knoppix i get this

cardmgr: satrting cardmgr version 3.3.2

cardmgr: Unsupported card in PCMCIA slot 1

cardmgr: Product Info Belkin 11mbps-wireless-note-network-ada

cardmgr: manfid 0x01bf, 0x3302 function 6 network

USB found

Enabling hotplug manager

autoconfiguring devices...............

and so on and so on

EDIT

im using the newest version of knoppix

Man I have never used pcmcia or knoppix... heck ive never owned a laptop but it could be that there is a loadable kernel module with the driver for the card. Just a guess though. If you know what driver supports the card then you can always load it manually.
