Switch ID guide

4 posts in this topic

So this is one of those things, imho, that really have just been a long time coming. Over the years, I've tossed around a lot of ideas about identifying switches in my head, but never really put them down on paper. Or, er, bits. Unfortunately, it's one of those things that also requires a ton of detail, and it just sorta...balloons out. So I thought I'd be able to get it done in a few weeks, but it's just become big. Maybe too big for just one person.

For that reason though, I'm releasing it as is - with my notes and everything, and will keep updating it until it looks done enough. If you have anything you'd like to add, any feedback, questions or whatever else, by all means, post it :) .

* If you make a large number of unsuccessful call attempts (can be something as simple as just picking up and hanging up, but partial dial works too), it'll pull your line out of service for 100 seconds, and if you're not on loop carrier, remove power from your line as well.

Is this why, that one time I had a line cord that had gone bad a few years ago, it had cut out so much that my 5E automatically knocked the battery off my line for a couple minutes?

Yup! I think the first time I heard this happen, I was trying to figure out why the 5ESS line card makes this really weird sound if you hang up and pick up again at just the right time. This was at a relative's house too - for a minute there, I thought I'd have to start coming up with ways to act really surprised when I was confronted with it.

You need a database for that. ;-)

Nice and thanks for the reading. :-)
