Does spamming through an open relay even accomplish anything nowadays?

Proves someone is running unpatched Sendmail from the early 90's?  :-P

I remember trying this crap reading meinel's bunk back in like '99, and even then it was too late lol.

If I remember correctly, Sendmail closed relaying be default and they all went away overnight.

I'm sure there are still ancient/unpatched/misconfigured servers out there. I know of at least one company who can't be bothered to properly configure their SMTP server, so they use an open relay with restrictive firewall rules. It's still completely open if you happen to be on their LAN or in one of the IP *ranges* they allow through the firewall.

I miss bouncing auto-responses back-and-fourth around the interwebz. Buhahahaha!

Ok, it was immature and irresponsible... unless one happened to work at AOL with too much time on their hands....

Port 25 is a great place to find "good SMTPs". I highly recommend checking it out. The Yelp reviews are great. Otherwise I know of a nearby mega church still running a highly misconfigured server circa 2002.
