Toll free number questions

3 posts in this topic

I have noticed that all (or most?) toll free number prefixes, end in a repeated digit. (example)

911

800

888

877

866

etc

But, 411 is an exception.

Does anyone know what that is about? Or is it just for people to know if something is toll free?

Anyways, Thanks for posting!

First off, 411 is most certainly, NOT toll free.

Just to clarify.

30 years ago maybe, but most definitely NOT today. Craplink wants an assinine $3 now for 411/555-1212 calls.

Supposedly it was free in Pacific Northwest Bell land, but United would always dick you out of a dime (raised to $0.25 by the early 80s) to call information (number was some nonstandard step-by-step thing like 113 or something weird like that). I don't know if that was legal at the time, but they did it.
