I have a question, seeing as we're (sorta) on the topic of blind people. How do they use the computer? Like they have those special "blind computers" (like the guy bought in the article) but how do they use it?

I'm just kind of curious on how it works.

While I don’t agree with ripping people off, I have to smile to myself as I listen to this; The bit about scaring people with abilities and ways of doing things most cant understand really got to me, it fits.

What I really hate is how they have all the money they need for Braille displays; them suckers are expensive, at least 10.5 thousand dollars for a 80 cell display the last I checked and they just order what they want, they even had a Braille printer and they are expensive as well; I envy there hardware I must confess, but at least I got mine without ripping people off.

To answer your question, we usually do it by touch or sound; Braille displays are really keyboard rests that let us feel what’s on the screen a line at a time, or we use speech synth software to make the computer speak what’s on the screen instead; But hardware for it is expensive (usually several thousand dollars as I said above) and gpl/open source software has a large way to go… so it all comes down to how strong willed you are and how hard your willing to work.

Checking out that link now..

no way... that sucks. I always wanted to mess with one of those. maybe i'll install tuxtalk on a second machine so that I can use 2 comps at once.

A older artical on freshmeat:

I agree on that one line about poverty; It sucks when everything you want costs more then your entirly yearly income, no matter how hard you work.

fyi, google is your friend:

A great artical:

To get a idea of the costs of hardware:
