I found a satellite antenna!

2 posts in this topic

As the title suggests, I found a sattelite antenna! Wooooh!

It has a box connected to it with what looks like RG-6 running in and out of it. I'm pretty sure it came off of a WildBlue satellite dish. So that means it was used for Internet connectivity, which means that there has just got to be something cool I can do with this thing. Anybody out there have any suggestions?

Neat! IIRC, WildBlue uses a two-way satellite link, unlike some of the others that use a dial-up modem for uplink. If it still has the cast aluminum amplifier on the bottom of the horn arm, there's probably a 1-2 Watt amplifier in there for whatever band they use.

Aside from its intended use, you can pair a satellite dish with a unidirectional antenna and use it as a reflector for other types of radio signals. The first that comes to mind is obviously strapping an 802.11 wireless cantenna to it. I've also heard you can build a crude radiotelescope with them, since the directionality is very high.
