Starting out

3 posts in this topic

Hey BinRev! I'm new on this forum and am curious about computers, exploits, flaws and programming. I'm wanting to learn more about computers and how to exploit them. The main reason i only want to learn is to fix and protect against any hackers so i know what's going on. I also am very interesting in learning how things work so i thought if i go into the flaws, it may be easyier to see how it works. I might set up a VM with windows 98 to find the exploits people have already found to see how they work. How does that sound?

I recommend securitytube.net.  It provides volumes of information to aspiring network security professionals.  Setting up a home pentesting lab is a great way to learn and develop one's security skills.

I will critique you a little bit and tell you that I wouldn't create a VM as far back as Windows 98.  It's too old.  Use Metasploitable.  Metasploitable is a purposefully flawed Linux operating system.  You can run buffer overflows and other exploits against it.
