Shutdown command: access denied

3 posts in this topic

I'm on a local network. When I try to shut down any of the other computers on the network using the shutdown command, I get "Error 5, access denied." Any solutions?

I'm assuming your using the shutdown command in windows...

The only way you can shutdown other computers on a LAN is if you have administrator privileges...

If you know the admin password than you can just right click command prompt in the start menu and choose run as admin...

If your workstations are not connected to a domain and the username/password on the remote machine is different than the local machine ; you will need to establish a connection to the remote machine first, enter the username/password, and then run the shutdown command. Example:

From the local machine

1. Go to start -> run

2. Type \\remotemachine\

3. You will be prompted for a username and password

4. Now you will be able to run "shutdown -m \\remotemachine -s -t 3"
