Dell Wireless into Promisc

3 posts in this topic

I'm running CrunchBang on a Dell inspiron 1545 with the default wireless nic. It shows up as ethernet under linux. Running Wireshark, I can't get it to capture packets in promiscuous mode. How do I remedy this?

(I'll try BT4 later (or tomorrow) and post back with results)

ifconfig <interface> promisc

Some drivers will not allow the NIC to go into promiscuous mode by design (or lack of design, rather). Most standard nic's (from my experience) will work with libcap, but wireless is a whole different story. You need to find out the chipset and google around to see if promiscuous mode drivers exist... There is a slight chance BT4 might have updated drivers that do allow promiscuous mode, but maybe not.
