MAC address manipulation?

4 posts in this topic

Hi everyone new guy here. I'm in the AAS IT program at my local college and am really enjoying learning all about this stuff but at time I feel they are not teaching us quick enough, lol. The other day my instructor alluded to a way to manipulate the MAC address on a computer but he said we probably wont learn about that till the next class in the networking part of the degree.

So my question is this does anyone know how to manipulate the MAC address on a machine to something different?

Thanks people

On a *nix operating system you can change your MAC address with ifconfig.

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 hw ether FF:FF:FF:00:00:00
ifconfig eth0 up

Replace eth0 with your interface and FF:FF...00:00 with the MAC address you would like.

On windows it's just a registry tweak, you can look it up if you would like.

Not even that. It can be done in the properties of the network driver (most of the time).
