Can Ubuntu boot & run from a flash drive

5 posts in this topic

I need to know this before I start onto this - will Ubuntu boot ok from a bootable flash drive? I know how to make the drive bootable, that's not a problem.

Anyone who knows, post it.

Yes, it will. I don't know how you plan on making the drive bootable, but this is easier than using something like sys-linux.

EDIT: your computer's bios will need to support booting from usb/sd/etc... though

If you are wanting to boot a NetBook there are already images available:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook

If you are wanting to convert a CD image to USB then you can use the tool included on the LiveCD (have to boot CD on another machine) or use the 'easy to use' Unetbootin:

Cheers,

Mungewell.

A way around this is to use the PLoP bootloader. Boot PLoP from floppy/disk and then select 'boot from USB'.

For a sec I got really excited about that, but found out it doesn't work on SD card readers that aren't attached to the USB bus.... I hate a USB dongle sticking out of my netbook when I want to run backtrack. :(
