locked out of vista

I know this will sound really stupid but I forgot the password for my vista and kumbuntu pc and I was wondering if there is any way you can reset the passwords by using software or other means.

Thanks a lot,

Yep, +1 for rainbow tables. Just boot from a USB stick or CD and copy SAM and SYSTEM files. This will work 90% of the time, depending in how syskey was enabled... the default and most common setting allows this attack. If they have LAN man hashes don't even bother d/l rainbow tables, as a modern Core 2 Duo will exhaust the keyspace before your tables are even downloaded (probably).

EDIT: i use l0phtcrack 6, not sure if ophcrack supports syskey or not.

The Wolfman couldn't find anything from the ophcrack website, but according to Midnight Research:

Ophcrack comes with an interesting utility tool called bkhive2 which is capable of extracting Syskey bootkey from the system hive file thus defeating the additional encryption layer for the SAM file.
