(ARCHIVE) some numbers

1,263 posts in this topic

I was thinking. It would be interesting is if we looked at some old text files (i.e. this old gem) of scans and numbers from back in the 1980s and early 1990s, and call the numbers and make an up to date text file of what those numbers are in 2004.

I love reading old text files with scans and phone numbers, and actually dialing up the numbers in the files. I'm often surprised when I dial up a number from those old files, and the number is still the same! It's just a feeling I cannot describe.

Some of the best numbers I have came from text files from 1984. You usually get about 15% working numbers in those files. Sometimes, for non-WATS numbers, you need to figure out the new NPA for the area.

And as for the 800-213-TEST (8378) number, the color changes every weekday. I still haven't figured out what the fuck its for, though.

yeah i loved reading the old files calling all the old numbers just to see what they where and did. i was thinking about doing a revised copy of number list and whatnot. but i decided not to.

215-504-5793

It was playing an audio feed from a TV station once when I called it. Now whenever I call it is just dead silence after answering.

When I was local to this number I found it in a scan. when I would dial it as you dial a local number in your npa (no area code) it says "It is necessary to for you to dial the area code plus 7 digit phone number when dialing this call. Please hang up and try your call again." Well that was weird. So I then called it with the area code first. Then I get the "We're sorry, it is not necessary to dial a 1 or 0 when calling this number. Will you please hang up and try your call again."

umm... ooook

the number is 608.676.9990

Not really mind blowing but still... wtf?

what the hell is 802-660-1642???

Sounds like the tone generator I used to use when I had to find lines with my inductive line tester. Maybe they use that instead of carrying around another box?

Typical PBX reorder, generally from systems descended from Western Electric (AT&T, Lucent, Avaya)

Simple explanation: ten digit local dialing. When someone just dials seven digits, they get a recording instructing them to dial the area code. If they dial one plus the area code, then they get a recording telling them not to dial the 1.

Fairly obviously simple, actually

(914)737-9938

Call it a few times if you get a ring to reorder. Its a little broken, but usually every 4th time calling, you get the recording.
