866-316-7489 - This is some sort of strange extension prompt for the Verizon Wireless customer service IVR. DNIS entries are four digits. Here's a few examples;

9000 - ANAC (CPN)

8011 - High call volume context

5012 - Enterprise Data support

2002 - Rep transfer function. Instead of actually transferring you, it spits out *8 and the number for a call-center

800-877-0220 - Elkridge, Maryland Sprint office PBX

220 is the code for the Elkridge LD tandem office. I'm thinking there might be more tandem-related goodies stashed away in -877.

573-234-1999 - Rings now. Must have been during a down time. Unknown why but working normal now.

5736356659 - Was cold calling for work and came accross this number. Was supposed to be for Beetem & Card. But it just rings. After a while it will pick up and squeel but not like any fax machine or modem I have ever heard. It sounds like something you have heard out of the movies when there is a super computer with a tape reel lol.

this is honestly the most metal phone number I have ever encountered.

Comrex ISDN Nexus test phone number: 978-772-9404.

the number might have changed since it was posted but as of now this just gives me static. I'm insanely curious what an ISDN test number does though (sorry for all these double posts!)

edit: what? there's crosstalk of... something?

Occasionally, ISDN codecs will try to send audio in whatever codec they're equipped to use over a standard voice call. Occasionally, when trying to play back one codec as another (playing back what's probably g.722 as uLaw in this case), you can hear something resembling what it's supposed to sound like.

970-244-0061 - This is an announcement machine sitting on a POTS line. Along with some DTMF, it has a recording of the Centurylink LD/LCI woman repeating what I'm guessing is the company's mission statement in a monotonous drone. There's something a little dogmatic about this O.o

717-362-0001 - "Your receiver has been off hook for twenty seconds, which has caused our equipment to time out. Will you please hang up your receiver? Thank you.

two lame ones:

309-227-9999; funny sounding SIT tones courtesy of Citizens Telecom Co/frotneir illinois

309-228-9999 took like 10 seconds after the last digit, and finally connected me to a tandem error message (068T, calling from chicago suburbs). maybe something funny is going on in the ss7 stream here

213-339-1077 - "This is route verify 339-1339."

503-426-1999 - North County showcases their strange taste in music. *, 0, and # control playback progress, and 1 goes to a milliwatt

funny sounding SIT tones courtesy of Citizens Telecom Co/frotneir illinois

Hah, that's pretty much what I thought when I first heard them too. Those come from a DMS-100 EDRAM card. Part of the reason they sound that way is the SITs it has are actually really short little bursts; the FPGA running the card is responsible for looping them to save space.

While we're talking about subtly weird things, I happened to find this earlier - 213-339-1022. The 5ESS has a perfectly good busy tone, but AT&T, in their tireless progress to make the busy signal more exciting or something, dedicated an announcement channel to recording it in a switchroom on speakerphone.

This technically isn't a PSTN number, but I thought I'd share it anyway since it made me laugh. 317-3999 on the MCI Vnet network will get you a recording from a German call center. The music bed on there is so eighties it hurts.

312-924-9925 - "Your intra-LATA toll provider is SBC Local Exchange Carrier or a reseller of the SBC Local Exchange Carrier's network."

503-654-9900 - Synthesized voice, "AM transmitter. Please enter access code"

i get SIT "the number 801-255-0017 is IN service please try your call again"

shouldn't it say NOT IN service?

SIT "the number 935-9993 is IN service please try your call again"

970-879-9935 & 970-879-9589 both have the in service AIS.

879-9589 used to be my number but then I had it changed. That recording has been on since.

309-372-9974 - CO Sensaphone

707-584-0078 - This number is weird. If you put one call up to it, the call will just ring indefinitely. If you send two calls, it'll answer with a modem. I guess a switchman has been having fun with a hunt group feature.

Anyway, glad to see a little life in this thread :) .

We regret we have been ordered not to complete calls to that carrier's numbers. Please try alternative means of communication. Thank you."

804-527-1275 - Ancient Rolm PBX at the MCI Richmond tandem office. 0+7xxx will transfer you to some weird doohickey that takes DTMF.
