8473480100: This is a voice mail box that I set up jokingly for "Bill Zwensky," whose name I use for all my SE'ing calls and has sort of become my phreaking alter-ego. The answering machine is just me talking in a weird voice, but the thing thats most interesting about this number is the numbers around it. Its an exchange (I think i'm using the term exchange incorrectly) of vacant VM's with the default password of 1234. Leave me a message if you want to.

Lol, I just rang this and someone answered! Are the VMB's no longer available?

Apparently. Someone answered for me too. Oh well, you couldn't third party bill with those anyway. By the way, how is it decided that the number can be third party billed to or not? I assume the telco has a database of sorts that they can check to see if the number is a in-use residential number or not, but I'm not completely sure. If someone could message me the answer, because this is already off topic, that'd be great.

If I find a carrier signal, how can I interact with it?

I have a Macbook, it doesn't even have an RJ11 jack, just ethernet and wireless.

I could get a USB modem, but am unclear how once I got it and plugged it into a phone line I dial/send data.

First, you need a dial-up modem. Then you need a terminal emulator (software) to connect to the carrier. Simple as that.

Do you mean terminal in a sense like the terminal program with OSX, or a special piece of software?

A few numbers, nothing too interesting . At the end I have a list of faxes/carriers. I still can't tell which are which, but I know that a lot of people sure like carriers, so I posted them anyways.

800-752-4580 A recording that may have crosstalk. I'm not sure.

847-415-9701/9702 Silent line? Another thing - when I call this number, I get this really high, soft tone, about one second after dialing. Strangely, when I hit flash, and then flash again, the line is silent for about one second, and then the high tone plays again, so I think the tone is coming from my switch (a 5ESS). Could someone explain this to me?

847-415-9703/9740 - hello, you have reached the intertel voice processing system. All dtmf is an "invalid choice," apparently it is looking for a voice command. Strange.

847-996-8000/8019 - recordings asking for authorization codes.

847-996-2xxx A pretty cool crackling recording. "Sorry, the toll free number you have dialed is not in service" reorder

847-245-9999 "888888888"

847-201-5998/5999 "You have no access to this service" *hangs up*

847-206-0000 strange. High sounding tone that responds to DTMF. The exchange is owned by American Messaging Inc. Pager? Star gives a reorder that is ridiculously similar to the reoder of Arch Wireless, another paging service. One can be heard at 847-333-3310

701-245-0001 "The number you have reached is NIS. This is a recording. (DTMF digit)" This recording is everywhere apparently. Mpower communications uses them in IL an CA, SRT communications uses them in North Dakota, and Chicksaw telecom in Oklahoma. Dunno why there is a DTMF digit at the end of this one, though.

701-242-0000 A CBCAD recording. Its pretty cool, though. You can really tell the different segments of the recording in this one.

Faxes/Carriers

847-400-1591 through 1599

847-400-3601

847-415-5998 through 5999

847-996-1860 through 1999

847-376-8000

847-213-9999

701-245-0000

701-242-0002

Nope, it's actually coming from the T-carrier circuit on your end, or something that forwards out to one of the CLEC customers (given how much CLECs like VoIP, it'll prolly be an STP of some sort). If I had to guess, I'd say it was probably trying to set up the connection, and was simply having trouble.

On some offices with older T-carrier circuits, if you listen very carefully, though, you can actually hear that noise faintly in the background when it puts you onto an outgoing trunk. If I'm not mistaken, some of the newer ones are silent. I have no idea :/ .

Also, generally, most switches don't make noises like that, but most DMSes are known to make a similar noise, but it's distinctively lower pitched. For some reason, a lot of 5Es I use seem to have a faint hum in the background, even when I'm close to the central office. Bad luck, maybe?

Believe it or not, all of those phrases actually come standard with that AIS, even that weird sounding 'please check the number and try your call again'. Even though they've never heard of quality control, their products are pretty popular with independent telcos, since they do a lot of uber all-in-one applications.

EDIT: I thought I might mention that I called the 703-818-GETS number that Unity posted, and it seems to be forwarding to the user assistance number now. Last time I called it, it seemed to be forwarding to an unassigned 710 number. Or were the 710 numbers forwarding to it? I'm confused.

203-453-0965 - Proctor test set!?

Nice find. I'm surprised this one can be reached from outside the area, although it doesn't run through the list of tests when I call and just says to "please go on hook". The Proctor Test Set is a device manufactured by Harris IIRC that lets you run through a wide variety of line tests. Anything from tones, to payphone coin tests (even from a home line), data tests, DTMF tests, ringback, reverse polarity, etc. I found mine in my area a number of years ago when I first got into phreaking. I think the number was 112.

Yeah, I'm well familiar with Proctor Test Set, and it's purpose, but it seems incredibly bizarre, finding it on an actual directory number, and being able to reach it from the outside. The way it works is that it directly interfaces to your line, it doesn't go through the uLaw digitization equipment or anything else like that; I believe when you dial then number for Proctor Test Set, a physical relay in your line card pops up (generally in most switches, there are two; one for ringing current and another for testing) and the test set takes over the function of powering your phone line, since the central office is literally putting your line *on* the test set.

Also, are you sure it's manufactured by Harris? I was under the impression it was manufactured by Proctor, Inc.

847-765-0520 Rhythmic clicky noises. When you hold down any dtmf button on your phone, the tone pulsates.

773-244-0001 - Starts with a normal ring, and then to a ring that is used by Ameritech for some of their test numbers. It answers with a high tone, and responds to DTMF. Like most Ameritech test numbers, its really non-descript.

773-244-0103 - another strange test number. Strange hum in the background, and whenever you pass any sort of sound into the number, it responds with a sound similar to a wooden block being tapped by a stick. 123456 results in two beeps, while most everything else seems to not really do anything.

773-244-7699 - "You have reached the lakeview phoneroom. This is only an announcement and no messages will be taken. Thank you."

847-740-9901 "All test positions are unmanned at this time. Please try your call again later.

312-432-0002 "No route exists to the dialed destination," then rings forever. This recording is heard all over 312-432.

847-670-9997 "AT&T nationwide 411, we will also find any type of buisness." Unfortunately, this isn't a 411 backdoor. It's just rings out after the recording plays

847-872-9951 -At first I thought this was a silent line, but then I found out that it's actually talkable. Only two callers can connect to this.

For 244-0103, I think that description perfectly sums up the noise that's made. I got it to respond with four beeps by dialing 0### and 0*.

The same recording that's on 740-9901 is also on 412-885-0075. Trevelyn posted that a while ago. FWIW, that lady is also the voice of the Expanded Announcement System.

That talkable line is pretty cool. The noises you hear right after you call into it are quite odd, and I wonder why they go away after 2 or 3 seconds.

202-484-0000 - I think this is some sort of SS7 test. When you call it normally, you usually get three bursts of dialtone, a pause, and then it repeats the bursts twice. Afterwards, you get a recording telling you that your call most definitely didn't go through. At least, that's what I get. I *believe* this is coming from a local tandem in my area. From a Sprint calling card, it cuts off after the first set of bursts, and then just gives you an announcement from the calling card platform itself telling you that the number is busy.

EDIT: I *believe* that this number is used to tell you how long it takes for an SS7 message to reach the distant equipment. The equipment that takes action is supposed to take you off of the number, disconnect the call, and give you a recording. When you use pretend-phone services like Freecall to call it, it'll take more than twelve sets of bursts for it to finally get back to the distant end, because they route their calls internationally. Typically, if you call an 877 number from that service, it's not uncommon to get an error message from France Telecom telling you to dial the number a certain way, or just a patronizing message telling you that the number isn't toll-free from outside the US.

I was talking to one of my friends on there and a guy finally came on after i say 1 1/2-2 minutes sounding real staticky saying Hello is someone on my line. She finally said hello and he goes, "Are you from the phone company?"

Yeah.. we were talking about how cool it was that we were talking, and a guy comes on and says "Hello?! Are you on my line?" "Yeah! Hang up then."

I stayed on for a while, and you could hear some noise in the background still. I said "Hello?" He said, "Are you the phone company?" I said, "No.. I must have the wrong number" He said "What number did you dial?" I made up something close to his. I said, "I'm sorry I have the wrong number." He said, "Ok. bye."
