got an exchange mixed up here at first. (;

Key Used in this Post:

[a] Automated Answering

Service Announcement

[?] Unknown

Here's a number that features a voice over from the same guy who does the SIPPhone service announcements:

800-846-4700 [a] "Due to the high cost of inbound toll free calls from your location, we must call you back to allow you access your Teams Game. The phone number you are calling from is 1-NPA-xxx-xxxx, if this is correct, press 1, if this is incorrect or you would like to enter a different phone number press 2."

If you let it loop that message four times, afterward you'll get a recording of a woman asking for a conference PIN.

So, it could be used as an ANAC. It even reads back SIPPhone numbers (not directly routable from the PSTN).

Some interesting items from a recent scan of 800-848-81xx:

800-848-8103 [a] "Thank you for calling the Real Estate Information Line. Please enter the 4 digit ID number of the special report you are interested in."

800-848-8135 [a] "Please enter your prepaid card number"

800-848-8136 [a] "Please enter your prepaid card number"

800-848-8147 [a] "Thank you for calling Crazy Fart" (probably not, but that's what it sounds like?)

800-848-8149 (A few notes of intro music, Busy Tone that fades out into "Sorry this number is not available at this time. Thank you. Goodbye")

800-848-8155 [?] (: Pleasant-sounding dual frequency tones. (440hz and 620hz) Low-High-Low-High-Low-High-Low-High)

800-848-8157 [a] (VMB, Very bad audio/interference. Sometimes without greeting. * gets "Enter PIN")

800-848-8166 [a] "Thank you for calling Credit First National Association. Please enter your 6 digit score number"

800-848-8186 [a] (VMB of a lady who works for Marina Telecom, sometimes she actually answers)

800-848-8193 [a] "Welcome to the Church-is-Life Benefits Enrolement System" (asks for Social Security #)

800-848-8199 (Very strange service announcements)

About 8199's service announcements, most commonly you'll find that it takes the following format:

"Your call cannot be completed as dialed, please check the number and dial again."

Followed by one of the following codes (there may be more, but I haven't heard them yet):

21E

21L

23E

2AL

2BE

2BG

2BJ

2CF

2CX

2ED

Then the female recording will often repeat, sometimes it is skipped, followed by a guy:

"Due to unusually high call volumes, we are unable to process your call at this time. Please try your call again later, we apologise for any inconvience and thank you for calling."

And then it hangs up, some alternatives to that format are just a reorder, or more interestingly:

(reorder for a few seconds)

"We're sorry we cannot continue processing your call, please hang up"

307-789-9980 - This is a ringing number on a DMS-100. What's so great about it, then, you might ask? The pitch is, well, odd for a DMS-100 ring. It's even lower than a typical DMS-Centrex ring (434-978-2200 is an example of a DMS-Centrex). Unlike what many people think, in a digital switch, the ringing tone is genetated by individual pieces of equipment, rather than software in the switch under normal occasions, since switches aren't exactly the most powreful machines in the world from a processing power standpoint. I never thought I'd be saying this about a digital switch, but I'd really like to hear the busy signal sometime on this thing. I don't know if this is a coincidence or what, but the milliwatt in this exchange seems to be off-frequency, too, but it's higher pitched.

EDIT: Oh, wait, it's an AXE-10. My bad.

914-788-9999 - Around the turn of the century, New York got introduced to the 631 area code. A lot of switches around the 914 area have fairly typical area code changed recordings for 631 and 845, but of all of them, this is the most ghettotastic recording I've ever heard. Aside from the loud noise superimposed over the recording, the most striking feature is a really deep voice that comes on immediately after the TTY tones saying "-will be on the line". Makes me think of an R-rated movie trailer whenever I hear it.

(Insert joke about the 631 area code coming to a theater near you here)

I don't know about the first one, but the second one is a modem answering with the Bell 212A protocol. A fair number of modems, both old and new, should be able to support it. Some require special configuration options to do so with, though, like ATB0 . It just depends on the model you have.
