That's one of those annoying religious types that will stop you on the street and try to recruit you. Ask him about something called "Mother God".

This thread hasn't had much headway lately, so I thought I might contribute a number

828-297-9990 - This is a Sensaphone unit located at a DMS-10 operated by an independent telephone company in North Carolina. Pressing option one, selection three lets you briefly hear the sound level in the CO. It really gives you an idea of what the overpowering ensemble of fans in the CO sound like. It makes me wonder if you can actually hear people shouting over it during business hours.

914-337-9900 - Kind of a weird thing to do. Put a voicemail up instead of a plain 'ol announcement, and then tell people not to leave anything on it?

That's not that unusual. What happens is that when a number stops being used for its specified purpose it can take mnoths or years tfor Verizon to get rid of all mentions of that number in their systems, documents, whatever. So the message is there for anybody who calls it to tell them that the mailbox for whatever service was on that number before is no longer being checked.

(800)532-7486.............AT&T Billing and account information center. Enter a number, and it fetches account info (apparently, I don't have AT&T account, so I didn't use it)

1-800-555-1213............Easy reach 800. To complete your call, please enter or speak each number of the access code now.

1-800-555-1111..........Welcome to Canada......charge call to calling card, colllect, call, charge call to another number.

1-800-555-7721........VERY weird ring, then a ultrashort carrier, then silence, then short carrer.

I've been looking around +1 (888) 846-27xx lately, and I've found a few numbers

that produce some weird tones that I'm hoping someone will be able to identify:

+1 (888) 846-2757

+1 (888) 846-2759

+1 (888) 846-2774

+1 (888) 846-2784

+1 (888) 846-2788

Never encountered any tones like that before, and someone suggested it may be

some kinda carrier. There may be a few others in that range like that, seeing as

my provider is notorious for automatically dropping calls to arbitrary US toll free

numbers right after dialling.

The only other potentially interesting number I saw was:

+1 (888) 846-2722

Which seems to be some FaxBack service with a few anti-phraud/anti-SE docs on

request.

If anyone's interested in checking out a few rareities from +27, there're a few

locally produced copper-cable monitoring systems called MINIDAS-800

and SECDAS-800 (default password: 1234), starting at:

+27 80 020-3294 [Within .za, replace the country code with 0]

There were a few hundred available last time I checked properly. (2002/03)

406-362-9996 - The recording is pretty cool, but whatever makes up the connection to this office certainly isn't. My guess is that they're using some poorly-implemented softswitch nastiness..

202-226-9996 - This is a decent conference system, but I think it's worth mentioning that it's on the AT&T Merlin PBX also used by the House of Representatives. Don't be fooled when it asks you for an extension. If you just wait for a few, it'll drop you right onto a conference, presumably the first one that's started.

508-551-9997 TDD + voice

508-551-9999 DTMF burst

508-310-9999 You must dial 1 or 0 before dialing this number

For 508-551-9999 those tones read as 5088B555 if I'm not mistaken.

What is this software you speak of? :)

631-246-9905 - (encoded in GSM) The service to this telephone has been temporarily disconnected. You may still reach emergency service by hanging up and then dialing 911. If you are not a Verizon customer, please hang up and contact your telephone carrier directly. If you are a Verizon customer, press 0, and you will be transfered to Verizon's speech-activated system to obtain more information.

The system that it transfers you is similar to the softswitch you get in DC on 202-954-1212, as I mentioned earlier, but the options vary slightly.

843-661-0053 - Let me just put it this way; I think phreaks are the only people who might be able to appreciate a number like this.

Why do phone companies put recordings such as this in the exchange? I could understand if every one was there they could just forward to that number when they needed a particular recording, but it seems like there are just a few in most exchanges.

To make people ask why.

1-888-334-2527 all it will say is "test" then if you wait a while it drops the line and then comes back and it sounds like a dial tone but goes straight to intercept. I got this number when I redeemed a free Dialbug coupon "TRANSITBUG$5" which phones you to confirm the account from 1-888-334-2528.

800-266-0007 - Verizon's Voice Messaging Service

800-266-0048 - weird tones

800-266-0049 - Says 858-458-1995 has been temporarily disconnected. It's been like this since at least March of 2005.

800-266-0057 - *weird chime, then busy signal* "sorry, this number is not available at this time. thank you, goodbye"

800-266-0085 - no answer, but a strange chugging noise can be heard faintly on the line.

800-325-8263 - beep beep

800-883-0016 - some store's "backdoor" menu

800-883-0032 - recording that says, "disconnect"

800-883-0080 - some recording in Chinese?

800-890-0170 - "please enter your driver log ID"

800-892-0130 - "hello, please enter your 6-digit passcode now"

800-892-0152 - "this mailbox does not exist" (well obviously it does!)
