Traceroute

5 posts in this topic

so i traced my route to 70.66.18.160, and right at the end(?) of the trace, it shows the same host twice, and traceroute doesn't seem to think it's the final hop even thoug its the ip im tracing to.

traceroute to 70.66.18.160 (70.66.18.160), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets

I'm going to guess that your target has two pipes going to it, one of which is a hop shorter. (Interestingly, MTR stops at the first occurrence of the destination IP).

Tcptrace can get past firewalls that block traceroute.

Paratrace from Dan Kaminsky also works well, but in a different way.

I think that might be it. But that doesnt explain why 14 isnt the final hop. or maybe it does....idont know, im only a ccna. Theres got to be a ccnp lurking around here somewhere
