Just joined here and its a nice site (NO INTRODUCTIONS SECTION THOUGH!)

I don't think I understand the question. Are you wanting to use the house phone as a modem? Or are you just wanting free dial up internet?

Free dialup internet as i don't think it would work as a modem. Would it?

Do you mean using the phone cables to approximate a LAN connection? (I assume you are already aware of dial-up ISPs... though they are a dying breed.)

Also, you can check out the "Welcome New People" thread in the NubieHQ forum if you would like to introduce yourself there: http://www.binrev.com/forums/index.php?showforum=4

Without an ISP? No... you still need somewhere to dial. The phone system is still a point-to-point system, it is not a vast network like the Internet.

Also, that kind of technology is 20+ years old. You can get an air-card for a laptop now that will let you use your laptop on your mobile phone's Internet/data connection. Same basic idea, but much faster and more reliable than an acoustic coupler or 1200 baud modem.

Not to my knowledge...but people do a lot of things that I don't think are possible :P

Some modern day pay phones (I've only seen these in airports) do have support for internet access.

You can also do the same basic thing using a bluetooth connection to your phone.

The expensive laptop connect card data plans are probably a little bit faster...I guess you just pay for what you get ;)

AT&T wireless has three unlimited data plans (last time I checked). If you have a phone with just a WAP browser, they let you get the cheapest 19.99 plan. You are not supposed to tether with the cheaper plans. However, if you set up the laptop correctly, it works just fine. The configuration is a bit tricky. If you get it wrong, you can end up with a whopping bill!

AT&T can theoretically tell if the data download exceeds what you would do with a WAP browser on the phone. In practice, they have been ignoring this loophole.

It is true that they allow connecting at whatever speed your equipment allows for the same unlimited rate.

no actually all the throughput rates are the same. the only time you will see a difference is if youre using a phone thats not 3g. so if i tether my 3g phone to my laptop im going to get the same rates as the laptop connect card, but if i take my sim card out and use it in my wifes phone for i wont get the fast 3g data rates because her phone is not 3g compatible. now of course youre not supposed to do this and if they find out theyll cancell your data package, but ive never had a problem and ive used it quite a bit.

So with an LG I can connect? Or just for iPhone 3g? I don't understand the whole 3g thing ima look it up :P

EDIT:

3G networks are wide area cellular telephone networks which evolved to incorporate high-speed internet access and video telephony. IEEE 802.11 networks are short range, high-bandwidth networks primarily developed for data.

Ok so 3G networks have high-speed internet? But can I do this on a lower speed internet?

Yeah, The iPhone isn't the only 3G capable phone. It's just what most people think about when they hear 3G

edit: Hah, You posted right as I did.

Yes, you can still do the same thing without a 3G network, but it's ungodly slow.

EDIT: And how much credit does it take every second lol?

I second the 'read the fine print' on the wireless plans.. A friend of mine got a $28,200 bill a couple of months ago.

Vector,

I was able to tether my phone to my laptop and create a Bluetooth DUN, but the free dialup number I found online was crap. You have any free dial numbers you can recommend?

I think what your talking about is...

Sometimes if you dial a phone number you'll hear a carrier on the other end.

99% of the time they are shown dialing into that number. I believe its something to do with VPN's.

I used to do just like vector with AT&T and a V3i Razr on Cingular/AT&T 3G and I got decent enough speeds. I had the unlimited data plan and all of that stuff but if you read the fine print that is not covered. One month I didn't pay extra at all. The next month I had a $489 data bill. Make sure using it to connect a computer to the internet is part fo the plan you are using or you will pay by the kilobit or megabit for the transfer which can get incredibly expensive.

As far as free ISPs I'm quite sure there are still some other there. Not as easily available as it was with the NetZero and BlueLight days but I'm sure there are ad supported dial up ISPs out there if you look around. Or if all else fails you can use a free AOL trial *cringe*.

I don't think this is what you were referring to earlier but I bet it is possible to achieve wireless dial up from a cordless phone, I'm going to do some searching in the morning.

A cell phone isn't necessarily a house phone. The OP was asking for free internet which we'd assume he'd know what a modem is from watching WarGames, Sneakers, The Net or just about any other feeble attempt at turning our lives into 90 minute thrill rides for the people en-mass.

So assuming he has a modem (just about every modern laptop has one... and pci modems you can't even give away... if not, check out goodwill/thrift stores). And assuming he has a dial tone (his own line or his neighbors... we won't delve into this too much), all he really needs is an ISP or a dialup with shell.

And for that... there are still alot of. Libraries still sometimes have shell accounts you can access via modem, National providers like AOL and NetZero give away X amount of minutes every month and depending on where you live *or* who pays your long distance bill, here in Washington State we have NoCharge.com which is a free ISP. Camp all you want, enjoy the 33.6-56k goodness.

But with wifi being everywhere, you might as well buy a can of pringles and check out wigle.net to find the nearest open wifi you can use.

Assuming you are hard core tho, here's one for the bitchez....
