hands down, I'd have to say site5.com because it's a ridiculously insane offer, but I also gotta say that the guys over at 1and1.com aren't so bad either as I used them for 3 years and their service was quite nice (I hosted my own cgi proxy for personal use and never heard a complaint).

They are all cheap. Bluehost/hostgator are good hosts. I used hostgator and everything was fine. Bluehost I heard good reviews from.

With my current employer we run all of our development stuff that we show to clients off of Dreamhost, and it works pretty decently. We also run our own intranet stuff of of it, and the performance-to-price works well. Their support is prompt, although occasionally, it takes a few exchanges until the tech you've got looking at the issue actually understands the issue at hand. They probably deal with a high volume of tickets, so it's not unheard of to get a stock answer that doesn't quite fit the real issue at hand.

I've also used 1and1, and I'm not a huge fan. If nothing else, they seem to do a lot of maintenance, and it also seems to come at "odd" times. Aside from the positive feedback above, I've never heard of anyone giving them a thumbs up ahead of other providers, such as Dreamhost.

While I can't provide such an extensive review as Irongeek did, here's what IX has got:

Windows/Linux server option.

For 4.95/month you get:

  • 1 Free domain registration
  • Unlimited* Disc Storage
  • Unlimited* Bandwidth
  • Unlimited Subdomains
  • 2500 E-mail accounts
  • PHP v5
  • Perl
  • CGI
  • CGI-BIN
  • Javascript/DHTML
  • Server Side Includes (SSI)
  • 50 MYSQL Databases
  • 50 PostgreSQL Databases

*As for unlimited storage and bandwidth, my account shows that I have a max limit of:

Bandwidth: 97.7 TB (Terabytes)

Space: 1.9 TB (Terabyte)

So, not quite unlimited, but it's alot for the price.

Other more expensive plans offer more features. Go check them out if you are interested.

If you do sign up tell me what you think of the service. I have been quite satisfied for as long as I have been with this company. No, I don't know the owner, or anyone that works there. I just think that I have found a really great host, and have never seen anything that beats it.

Hope I have helped. ^_^

EDIT: Oh yeah, another service I once used was Globat Web hosting. To sum up their service quickly, it was unimaginably awful. Only use Globat if you feel like paying for a service you won't be able to use.

bluehost is $7.00 a month and you get unlimited bandwidth/space

their email requires you to use box.*. bluehost.com as port 26 SMTP server (va your isp's smtp server)

but it's a minor flaw.

Dan,

Didn't you at some point mention that you're only 15 or so? If that's the case, props to you for having your own hosting company. That's pretty impressive, especially considering what other kids in that age bracket typically do for jobs.
