A Breath of Life

29 posts in this topic

Here's the deal......

I was recently inspired by episode 41.1 of Default Radio and would like to share some thoughts. This scene needs a breath of life and that can only happen from all of us being on fire for the cause. This would include participation in forums, scanning, and getting together on bridges amongst other things. I feel more than ever that it's important to participate in order to discover new things and apply new ideas to the world of telecommunications.

I plan to devote what ever time, money, and effort that I can to help keep phreaking at it's full potential. It's a new year and to quote Doug form Default 41.1, "It's a year of telecom, a year of phreaking, a year of Default." Sorry to sound preachy but I feel if it is our time to really get the ball rolling in this scene. Anyone else feel this way?

Shouts to Doug, lucky225, Royal, RijilV, and faceman for rehabbing Default Radio. Keep up the good work!

Well said. To be honest with you, phreaking has become a little less relevant in my life recently, but in no way am I saying that I'm giving it up -- I'll be ready to hold it down until there's nothing left to hold :) . I know this belongs more in the scanning thread, but I think it's only fair to start this thread off living up to a promise of the Default year.

This was actually inspired by the calling center recordings Jman posted in the Scanning thread. I came across 9999 one day when I was looking for something else. I put it to the back of my mind, and almost forgot about it since. What's funny, though, is that this switch, and more than likely the calling center along with it, is located in one of the worse sections of DC. As in, like, bulletproof glass on all the fastfood places bad. I feel sorry for all the reps  . Also, about halfway through the scan, I switched to a list made by handscan.net, so the numbering is a little weird.

202-575-9999 - Business Office hold recording

202-575-9998 - Thank you for waiting. Our lines are still busy...<same as 9999>

202-575-9996 - Ringout

202-575-9995 - 703 Northwestern dispatch center

202-575-9994 - Milliwatt

202-575-9992 - Verizon Repair, "information does not display" according to rep

202-575-9991 - Silence

202-575-9990 - Echo

202-575-9985 - Ringout

202-575-9975 - Rings out, forwards to another ringout

202-575-9967 - Ringout

202-575-9968 - Ringout, forwards to another ringout

202-575-9955 - Reorder

202-575-9949 - Milliwatt

202-575-9939 - 105-type test

202-575-9935 - Ringout

202-575-9936 - rings to a Verizon rep of some sort, probably repair

202-575-9931 - Verizon Repair, says Spanish-speaking employees are unavailable, and then forwards to an English speaking rep

202-575-9928 - Ringout

202-575-9921 - Busy signal

202-575-9918 - Busy signal

202-575-9914 - Busy Signal

202-575-9915 - Busy Signal

202-575-9910 - Ringout

202-575-9911 - We're sorry, due to excessive call volume, we're unable to connect your call...202-575-9904 - Something picks up silently

202-575-9905 - Ringout

202-575-9906 - Hello, I'm SSCU. Your identification, please.

202-575-9907 - Thank you for calling Verizon! To proceed in English, press one now. Para continuar en Espanol, marque el dos.

202-575-9900 - Ringout

202-575-9901 - Ringout

202-575-9902 - Ringout

202-575-9903 - Ringout

Props to not just t3st.s3t, Dual, and Jman, but to everybody out there who still gives a damn.

Thank you both for this thread and what you do for the scene. We need to reiterate that small contributions add to the collective and often lead to larger revelations. Know when to post to the Nubie HQ, and don't hesitate to post about a local pay phone or an interesting number. Let's make Royal's profound words, "Everything in phreaking dies," untrue for the Community itself.

Test set, I totally agree with you. I'm really not all that active in the "scene," but I would really like to be. I think it would be great if we phreaked as a community, and I'm trying to think of ways we could do it... It would be great to see some more phreaking projects in the projects section of this forum. I really can't say that I am able to contribute as much as I would like to... I don't have my own phone line and I don't have unlimited long distance, so as of now I'm restricted to doing any serious phreaking inside my LATA. But anyway I can contribute, I will.

You can always focus your efforts to toll free numbers.

To quote a certain textfile...

Another way to have some creative fun when scanning exchanges is to use a

prepaid phone card. If you don't have long distance on your line this can be

especially useful. When scanning the 00xx or 99xx blocks of an exchange, most

of the numbers in there are cool error messages, which are free to call. They

do not supervise, therefore you dont pay. It's amazing how many people forget

that you don't get charged to call an error message, whether it is a local or

a long distance call.

If you're okay with buying an AT&T product, I find their cards are best for scanning, at least the one that Target sells; some have different platforms -- they let you

skip all the menu prompts without hesitation, will immediately cut off a call that you want to hang up on without a weird sequence (Sprint cards want you to hold down #

for two seconds, and the 7-11 Verizon cards want you to press some weird combination of * and # a bunch of times), and they'll allow ten different calls to the same

call to the platform. Generally, though, on most scans, you won't find that many numbers that supervise -- for the scan I posted above, you'll find seven numbers

that actually supervise. If you have a seven cents/minute plan, that's only fifty cents you're parting with, and if you compare it with other hundred block scans of

test numbers, you actually get a few more numbers that supervise than usual.

Also, excuse the weird font, Invision Power Board doesn't like it when I paste excerpts from text files.

I still haven't given up on my Last HOPE, for the phreaking scene. Maybe we can dig up all the people who disappeared from so many years ago on the SoCal bridge. Where did you all go!? Get the fuck back here and conf again motherfuckers!!!

Let's make Royal's profound words, "Everything in phreaking dies," untrue for the Community itself.

Those words, of course, have to do with all the little things that you find that eventually end up dead; no longer working. It's an inevitability, but it also motivates you to keep finding new stuff.

The scene ain't going anywhere kids. Not with the Access Coalition putting in work behind the scenes. We'll have a few releases out soon, one I'm currently finalizing and sending off to Phrack magazine that focuses on operator service codes (0/1XX).

I've been on the road a lot lately with a new job. But, I've been coming up with this idea that if we get enough people will really bring it back (hopefully). I'm going to run some stuff by thoughtphreaker. Anybody else that has some time that they would be willing to donate give me a PM and I'll tell you what I'm thinking about.

It's the right time, the holidays are coming up, last year from a week before thanksgiving to just after new years the scene was going crazy with all the people. Hopefully we can harness and maintain that power this time around. So be alert stuff is going to happen this winter. But, don't wait get some guys together and scan out an entire exchange. Don't wait for other people to do something, do something and expect other people to try and catch up. Don't say you can't think of anything to do if you haven't scanned for a while, you're bound to find something fun to play with (Faceman inc. does not advocate playing with anything).

Couldn't be more with y'all. There's not a whole lot I can think of to contribute, so I started scanning earlier today. The thing about this scan is that not only does it have a ton of awesome stuff, it's really taking it to a new place - There haven't been any scans I can think of in Wisconsin.

There's something in here for everybody. If you want a place to conference, this switch has got it. If you want something to play with, this switch has that, too. Or if you just want some interesting recordings to listen to, it's got those as well. Normally there's some things in here I'd hesitate to give out on a public forum, but the way I see it, if we're going to give the public scene a new breath of life, it couldn't deserve less.

It's called 'PSAP' or Public Safety Answering Point. A complete list can be found here:

http://www.phreaksandgeeks.com/text/psap.txt

they're similar to that, a few times the 911 dispatcher gave me a number that I could call to get that exact operator when I had to switch payphones or the like.

Reading the start of the topic gets me thinking, would it really help get things going again if we had another default radio? Not literally, of course - the chances of that are slim. Who else thinks we should try our luck at another radio show, though?

Yeah very slim, but yeah I think that's going to be our only hope. It seems like if we do something people will follow suit and join in on the fun. I Think we shall get some people together and bounce some ideas off each other.
