Some story similar to this happened to my boss. His house got raided but knew it was coming so he replaced all of his hard drives before they got there and ditched the other ones.

The best thing you can do, is get a good lawyer

then see if they really do have any thing on you,

Make a deal if they do.

I have gotten in trouble before for item like this but have agreed to secure the networks that I have done this to, in return that they all make this go a way.

If I were you I would try that. I did and it worked. It also got me a raise at work. :D

One more thing. SAY NOTHING TO THEM UNTIL YOU HAVE A LAWYER.

I do not know how smart it is to put this on a public form but, what is done is done.

Take it easy.

AS stated, Do not say anything without a lawyer present. If you cannot afford one, they will be provided by the court. If you say the wrong thing, even if you are innocent you could lead the courts to think otherwise.

When questioned just say you want an attorney. They will give some BS story about why you do not need one, but remember they do not have you best interests in mind.

agreed, you will probably get off with just probation but MAKE SURE YOU GET A LAWYER hackers may be the smartest people on the planet but we dont waste our life reading law books like they do so GET A LAWYER

do some seaching for pro bono lawers in your area, or even one that specialise in these kinds of case's some times they will do it for free.

but as for installing and getting into computers that are owned by the gov... you might have to make a deal. good luck

post edited? I want to know what happend!

Sorry man, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. Although I didn't get a chance to read the story before it was edited I understand that its probably not something to publicly disclose and I hope that everything works out for you in the best possible way that it can.

Actually don't deny anything... DON'T SAY ANYTHING. If you say something and they find you lied about it, you can get into even more trouble... (see:Martha Stewart)

Apparently it is illegal to lie to a government official but it's okay for them to lie to us. (Supreme court ruled it was okay...)

And like everyone else has said.. GET A LAWYER NOW!

btw: when I was trying to find the link on that supreme court case I found this and started laughing: http://www.news.com/Police-Blotter-Defenda..._3-6201632.html

Maybe you can use it to get all the software they used to raid you. ;)

Or....

Wasn't your daughter a pork queen?

How long is this going to take? Your wife is expecting me.

I could have been an FBI agent but my sister married somebody else.

I'm surprised you came by, Dunkin Doughnuts has a three for one special on.

After that they put the toilet plunger in your butt though :(.

This actually reminds me of a stunt my friend did when they took his computer, he some how rigged the computer so if you didnt hit the right keys on start up it would do something very amusing. (FYI: He had build a back up PSU into the computer just so if they tried to pull the plug it would keep running) So here's what happend from the reports and so forth, they had raided his house well he was asleep and nitched all his good crap. well from the police reports when they went to power on his computer a screen came up saying

"PLEASE ENTER SECURITY KEY"

"YOU HAVE 00:00:30 to COMPLIE"

and it was counting down..from thirty seconds

well they couldn't get it duhhh, so then a second red screen popped up saying

"SELF TERMINATION ACTIVATED"

and it started counting down from tweenty mins. well they tried to unplug it and it failed, so everyone ran out of the building and they called in bomb squad. well in the end when it hit zero nothing at all happend, but while they ran around in a scare the computer had enough time to nuke its own hard drive. they tried to slap a bunch of charges on him and nothing stuck. It was cleaver as hell in my opionion and he made the news:P

Wow, what were the cops thinking? Basic computer forensics demands that you make a backup of the drive (evidence) before you power it on. This must have been a while ago?

A vary long time ago. That rule of backing up the drive has been there for about 10 years or so.

On a other note.

My fail safe is having 4 kill switches on the computer. If the correct ones are not flipped on or in a different order then what it needs to be, the hard drive burns up by having to much power to it, causing physical damage. It has worked for me.

also I would delete your post if I were you.

Make that deal. It will save you. It saved me.

Wouldn't it be funny if the power connections to the hard drives were rewired... and if the drive was ever seized, stolen or otherwise plugged into a 'normal' power supply it would sense this and ignite some thermite or something.... Put a 'caution flammable' sticker on it to cover you from liability.

Anyone know how hot one has to get a drive to make it's platters 'lose' their memory?

No offense, and I'm not trying to flame but it seriously sounds that whole story was fabricated

- The police need to slap you in the face with the search warrant

- Police don't power on computers, that would completely taint the evidence.

- And as wolf said, forensically speaking you would just rip the hard drive out and image it.

but if you say so...

Way below the burning point of thermite, that's for sure! Turning the platters into a molten ball of slag pretty much rids them of any chance of being read.

We melted hard drive platters with an acetylene torch once. A propane torch won't do it -- just got them red-hot. These were the old oxide-coated platters though, which IIRC are a different composition than modern hard drive platters.

That's what I was thinking... Maybe black powder would be good enough... a lot easier to ignite too.

Hmmm... this is why you do things with a LIVE USB or LIVE CD and SSH into a server if you need to back anything up, have this server with a trusted friend or brother. If they notice you've been arrested or any thing fishy they can dump the drive and make it look like an accident.

Than again I don't know the story due to it being erased... and than again it's probley not smart to do anything from your home network but rather someone else's with a spoof'ed mac... My crappy Laptop doesn't even have a HDD so I just boot off a LIVE USB and SSH if nessecary.
