Some 411 about Instant Messaging

3 posts in this topic

a little 411 extracted from Network magazine...

Public IM systems use the following ports by default:

AOL:  TCP - 5190,4443

MSN:  TCP - 1503,1863,6891 *and* UDP - 13324,13325

YAHOO:  TCP - 5010

ICQ:  TCP - 5190,3574,7320 *and* UDP - 4000,4001

Some traffic may also go through port 80.

I think nearly all IM programs transmit in the clear. - Personally I know that MSN does, except for authentication.

And I heard that some IM software (not sure which one) will use port 80 is fthe normal ports it uses are blocked by firewalls etc. - Corperate IT managers who want to block IM are finding this a problem.
