Port 25.. blocked

10 posts in this topic

I've just been getting into setting up mail servers, and I'd like to know what options I have for getting around the 'infamous' port 25 blockage.

I know it's to block spammers, but I'm no spammer..

Any ideas?

Give your ISP a call & ask them nicely to allow SMTP traffic :)

I agree with chown in that upon asking they might unblock port 25 for you. If not, you may have to upgrade to a business account. Btw, who is your ISP?

err couldnt you just configure your SMTP server to use a different port?

my ISP blocks 22, 23, 25, 80, etc. all the common server ports ya know. Im not sure, because I have never hosted an SMTP server, but there must be a configuration file somewhere that you could modify.

If I decided to change the port, AFAIK my SMTP server wouldn't be able to communicate with other ones, which defeats the whole purpose.

use your ISPs SMTP mail server (mail.shaw.com or something similar)

or

use a SOCKS Proxy, you ISP probably hosts one

or

use a Mail Relay service (cost money)

Also, if you're using FreeBSD/Postfix, here is a quick tutorial on how to change your sending port

Regardless, port 25 should be explicitly blocked on your border firewall

My recommendation is to get a cheap virtual private server. I use tektonic.net they start at $15 a month.
