HFS+ Formatter

8 posts in this topic

Does anyone know of a windows formatter for the Mac HFS+ filesystem?

I have a partition in fat32 that i need to change to HFS+, but the mac installer's disk utility's won't do it for me.

I can't get this to install without it formatted correctly

DBAN the drive. One pass though, just enough to remove the fat32

Wouldn't that delete the rest of the HD aswell? I have a larger partition for Vista, which i am using now, and a smaller one for Mac. I just want to be able to format the drive before i try to install it because apple's installer says "unable to read partition map" and won't erase/format the partition.

Are you trying to convert the drive (thereby saving whatever data is on the partition) or format it (e.g. erasing everything)? If you need the former, pick up a copy of Partition Magic. If you need the latter, use FDISK to unformat the partition, then use Disk Utility to re-format it as HFS+.

It's a simple task, change the MBR partition identifier from 0x07(NTFS) to 0xaf(Apple HFS) and as recommended above... and reformat the partition. ^_^

Portable HFS+ formatting utilities can be found by searching Google/Sourceforge.. but why don't you simply format it on the Mac?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/hfsplusutils/

http://www.ardistech.com/hfsplus/

http://netbsd-soc.sourceforge.net/projects/hfs/

You get the point..... ;)

[EDIT: I just noticed you wanted to overwrite the dell recovery partition.. just substitute 0x07 to whatever Dell uses..

You should dd the contents of that partition to a file for safety anyway..]

ok, i'll look at those links.

Oh, the disk utilites on the installation don't wanna format the fat32 partition. It says" unable to read partition map"

I just don't wanna mess up my windows vista partition
