WiFi Science Fair Project

7 posts in this topic

I'm hoping some people around here know some stuff about antennas. I'm doing a science fair project that is very simple yet tricky for me. The purpose is very simple, do different antennas affect signal strength (no duh) and the conclusion will show which is best, sorta my aim.

The hard part for me is making the antennas and hooking them up. I dont know what I've gotten myself into!! :o The only simple antenna that can be made for a router is the parabolic reflector; http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template/ But what if i need to hook up something like a pringles antenna that uses some pigtail thingy. This is the part where I am seriously freaking out since I hardly know anything about this. So I would really appreciate if you PM all your friends, and spread this topic.

So, essentially what I'm begging for is info about pigtails, antenna connectors, etc. And homemade antenna ideas and how they can be used with a wireless router.

Please Please Please!

Thanks vector, but I'm looking for some info on how to attach that antenna to a wireless router so it can send out signals.

Now I'm scared because I don't know if thats possible!

grab a copy of the ARRL antenna book and start reading. You should also look into making a biquad, we've had very good results with them for getting a high range and spread. If you want distance only take a look at a cantenna or maybe a parabolic grid or yaggi.

Wow, thanks guys, but I didn't check on this topic lately and ended up doing a lame ass project about Diet Coke and Mentos reactions and how surface tensions and nucleation sites affect it, bla bla bla.

Slotted Waveguide Antenna

http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/SlottedWaveguide

I built one for shit's and giggles

Helical Antenna

http://www.askrlc.co.uk/

I've only built one to use with my GPS unit. Not really what your looking for but cool.

Sector Antenna

http://pe2er.nl/wifisector/

Very nice antenna, I use four of them around the house.

Biquad Antenna

http://pe2er.nl/

Very nice and small. I love to use it with a bluetooth adapter but it's ideal when mounted to a dish.

Helix Antenna

http://brneurosci.org/helix-antenna.html

Nice if your building it into a riffle like scanner.

Quarter wave Omni-directional Antenna

http://flakey.info/antenna/omni/quarter/

Vertical Collinear Omni-directional Antenna

Yagi are time consuming to make so don't bother. You can build other antennas but the above will keep most people busy.

Also check out this Wardrivingworld

You can find everything you need there,antennas,cables,adapters,connectors...

At wardrivingworld they are very helpfull in explaining how to built antennas.

just a quick question relating to the topic. I wanna make an antenna kinda like the pics on the links this topic started with, but can one antenna be faceing one way and the other ther other way. i dont wanna endup messing things up if one antenna is for incoming packets and one for outgoing packets.
