If you open a command prompt and type ftp.

Next type open, hit enter, and then type www.binrev.com.

What is that?

Well what's it for? If you close, then it mentions something about kb uploaded and downloaded. Is this just something that's extremely useless?

Well not alway's unless you are wanting to launch a attack with a oday exploit for pure-ftpd but it's only really any good for collecting information about the service running on the port.

Maybe...

Ok, not really. I'm just a n00b that's curious. I found something that mentioned hacking a NT server, and it mentioned the ftp command. I started plugging in sites just to see what would come up and then I found this. I just thought it would be cool if there was a way to chat while in there.

FTP is the "File Transfer Protocol" which is a way of uploading and downloading files to and from a server...

Welcome to the Internet. The largest educational tool ever devised where the only requirement is that it's up to you to separate the filth from the jewels. So, instead of asking questions, why not use its true potential and actually use it to answer whatever thoughts you have on your mind?

Moving to Newbie HQ.

This is simply our anonymous FTP server. Note that there isn't much there. This is because I check it and clean it out regularly. It is kept up to date and patched.

Basically you found an intentional service just like http. You are connecting to it but there is nothing there, at least not on our site. try some others.

The FTP server they're running prints out a banner, or was configured to. The banner is that text you see, excluding the login prompt.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, and is useful for transferring files to and from other computers. This particular one allows anonymous access.

The limit is probably there so that too many users don't connect at once, and use up the server's CPU power and/or bandwidth.

The purpose of the banner is (typically) to tell the user what kind of FTP daemon is running and the version, but some security conscientious sys admins will have it lie or not appear at all to throw off attackers...

Have you ever built a website? Ever used hosting other then any of the free hosts like geocities? Perhaps you have never used FTP, but as you get using it more, you will see all sorts of cool stuff like this:

connecting to 216.77.188.41:21
Connected to 216.77.188.41 port 21
220-Bellsouth Personal Pages FTP server v1.0 (1)

220- Welcome to Bellsouth Personal pages Ftp Service v1.0
220-==========================================================================
220-No Anonymous connections. This is a private ftp server. Users who connect
220-more than 6 times within a minute will be blocked for 10 minutes. Any
220-unauthorised use will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of law.
