That's why I posted. XP But what else would go with anime-leek-spinning-infinite-flash-website-of-doom?

well i got into hacking about a year ago, pretty late in the game i know, but im glad to be here.

I was something of a little shit and a tab bit reckless not knowing any precautions to take but i got a picture of my principal and did a little photo manipulation to make it look like he was having sex with some obese prostitute. I use ettercap to get an md5 hash of the principals pw and used cain to crack it and luckily cain had an option to add 2 numbers at the end of each word which was how they distributed their passwords. So i get into his first class account and they have basically like craigslist for the teachers at my school and i posted the picture i made of him up for sale for 5 bux and checked back a few days later and he had like 10 emails from other teachers trying to buy it. Guess some of them had a sense of humor.

I'm not really sure how old I was when I did this, but when I did this... I didn't even know I was hacking.

I was being a naughty boy and was browsing porno sites... I downloaded a sample video, that only lasted like 10 seconds... this made me sad. I looked where the file was located and it was something like this, "/videos/sample/jessica.wmv"

Of course, I do the obvious thing and look at "/videos/sample/" and bam! I get a decent size list of *.wmv files with different names. I dig deeper, "/videos/"... I see the folder "sample" and I see another folder called "membership".

"/videos/membership/"... JACKPOT! A big list of the full length pornos all for me!

Not much skill envolved, but I did enjoy the payoff.

So ... How does this relate in any form/way to hacking? You just 'cd ..; ls -al' and you seem to think this was hacking?

You have another thing coming, if you do.

Must you be so negative? Of course that's "hacking," what else is it?

I was so proud of my son today, his first hack! He's 10 months old and we have this baby gate in the kitchen to keep him out. The corner of it on the lower left is right on the edge of the dishwasher but the rubber stop is actually below the dishwasher and is not completely secure. My son did his reconnaissance, scanned the gate for vulnerabilities and found the corner, exploiting it mightily with a brute force babyfist attack and gained access to the kitchen. Unfortunately he has a thing or two to learn about maintaining access and covering his tracks.

As I recall, my first "hacks" involved AppleSoft BASIC, and took place in the first or second grade. Nothing in particular stands out; just random screwing around, made interesting by the fact that it was generally forbidden to type anything into it that didn't begin with "PR#" (the syntax used to make the machine attempt to boot from an external device).

My first successful hack came in the fourth grade, when the school had moved up to Macs (early '90s - think all-in-one LCs). They used a piece of software called BDW Control, which I would later discover was quite similar to FoolProof. It was quite old (dated back to the days of System 6), and was not aware of the Extensions Manager in System 7.5.

Long story short: boot the Mac while holding down the space bar, wait for the Extensions Manager window to appear, uncheck anything with "BDW" in its name, click Continue, and you'd be home free... reverse the process and it's as if you were never there. I tried to be cautious/careful/etc, but even then I was surprised at never being caught.

My reason for wanting to unlock the machines? The idiot admin had disable several semi-innocent apps, such as HyperCard and the NCSA telnet client. That, and I sometimes wanted to grab various things off the Gopherspace (yes, I said Gopher) and put them on floppies for later use at home.

Looking back, they sure did have a neat setup, considering that it was 1994 and we were a rural district. All three buildings had 10Mbit Ethernet in every room, with at least one Mac in each classroom and several labs of 30 machines in each building. The buildings had 100Mbit backhauls between them, a shared group of AppleShare servers at the high school, and 3Mbits of pipe coming in from Minneapolis for Internet access. Too bad that nothing but the client machines have been changed to date
