AVG antivirus for antivirus.

Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad Aware for anti spyware.

The windows firewall works well, turn it on in the control panel's security center.

Also make that windows update is set up to download updates automagically.

Finally, purchase an external hard drive to back up critical data, if you get a bad infection you're going to have to reformat.

Edit: Also download Firefox and the noscript extension. What that does is allow you to whitelist sites that you want to allow to run JavaScript, all others will be unable to. Other than opening malicious emails and Active X, this is the third most likely way you can get infected. The first few days of building up the whitelist are annoying, but then it'll be pretty much transparent.

Oh and all the things I've mentioned are 100% free.

Do everything Dial Tone said... Vary good advice

Also (this might sound stupid), buy a linksys router and lockdown the WiFi (disable it if you don't plan on using it or WPA it and ensure that the Admin panel is only accessible to wired computers) The router will block all the ports making it harder for an attacker to see your open services (built in firewall)

Yeah, Dial Tone pretty much nailed it. Might I also suggest WIndows Defender for anti-spyware. It's not the most effective scanner, but it integrates nicely and doesn't seem to hog up too many system resources.

some one posted this on another forum i am involved in

Eset Smart Security 3.0.128.0 Public Beta 1

ESET Smart Security is a fully integrated security solution and includes antivirus, anti-spyware, a personal firewall and antispam. While some competitive solutions purport to have similar functionality, ESET has developed a unique approach that provides true and full integration of point security solutions. The key advantage of this approach is that individual protection modules are able to communicate together seamlessly, to create unparalleled synergy to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of protection. Moreover, the integrated architecture guarantees optimal utilization of system resources, so ESET Smart Security continues ESET’s well know reputation for providing rock solid security in a small footprint that will not slow down an individual’s computer.

What’s new

ESET Smart Security is a milestone in the field of computer protection against infiltrations and attacks. The program offers more than just a sum of its parts – it is synergy that matters most. If all components are used simultaneously, the effectiveness of the whole program is multiplied. ESET Smart Security unifies all its functions to create a complex security solution.

ESET Smart Security is based on three basic pillars:

ESET NOD32 Antivirus + Antispyware

This component is in fact an improved version of the award-winning scanning engine of NOD32 Antivirus v2.7.

ESET Personal Firewall

Firewall monitors all traffic between a protected computer and other computers in the local network and in the Internet.

ESET Anti Spam

ESET Anti Spam serves to filter unsolicited email, which makes your work with email more effective.

and this was also posted but looks fishy

NOD32 Antivirus v2.70.39 for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP/VISTA

ESET NOD32 Antivirus System - Integrated, Real-Time Protection against viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, phishing, and hackers. Best detection, fastest performance & smallest footprint.

NOD32 Antivirus System provides well balanced, state-of-the-art protection against threats endangering your PC and enterprise systems running various platforms from Microsoft Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / 2003 / XP, through a number of UNIX/Linux, Novell, MS DOS operating systems to Microsoft Exchange Server, Lotus Domino and other mail servers.

Users of Microsoft® Windows® can experience the power and elegance of NOD32's ThreatSense Technology with ease and comfort. Our single optimized engine offers the best protection from viruses, spyware, adware, phishing attacks, and more. Keep tomorrow's threats at bay with our proactive detection technology. And it has the smallest footprint and fastest performance - bar none.

The fourth generation of the NOD32 Antivirus System features a fully integrated software suite characterized by an unprecedented detection track record, the fastest scanning rates and extremely low utilization of system resources. NOD32's detection efficiency combined with 2-50 times faster hard disk scanning rate earned the product many international prestigious awards.

ESET's NOD32 Key Features:

· ThreatSense™ technology — a single optimized anti-threat engine for analyzing code to identify malicious behavior, such as viruses, spyware, adware, phishing and more

· Unprecedented heuristic analysis capable of discovering new malware threats as they emerge

· Powerful virtual PC emulation technology enables unpacking and decryption of all types of archives and run-time packing

· Able to clean active malware running in memory

· Protects at multiple infiltration points, including http, POP3, SMTP and all local and removable media

· Removes infections from files that are locked for writing (e.g., loaded DLL file)

· Prevents infected files from being opened and executed, and warns on creation of infected files

· Automatic execution on system startup

· Supports multiple Terminal Server environments

· Supports scanning of mapped network disks

Comprehensive Protection

NOD32 is a single, highly optimized engine that works as a unified Anti-Threat system to protect against a broad spectrum of malware. Viruses, worms, spyware, and other malicious attacks, which are constantly evolving. Eset NOD32 utilizes patent-pending ThreatSense® Technology to detect tomorrow's threats in real-time, by analyzing code execution for malicious intent - keeping you ahead of the malware-writers.

Proactive Real-Time Detection

The best security is proactive. Malware protection must be real-time at the point of impact. Every minute one waits for a virus signature update creates a window of vulnerability that could have devastating consequences. Eset NOD32's ThreatSense® Technology closes the window of vulnerability left open by other reactive, signature-based antivirus vendors.

NOD32 analyzes application execution in real-time for malicious intent to detect and block over 90% of new malware threats proactively, without the need for signature updates in most cases. Most other vendors release signatures hours after their customers have been victimized and submitted samples.

Integrated Protection

Viruses, worms, adware, and spyware can and should be detected by a single engine. A well-designed, integrated application like Eset NOD32 can detect adware, spyware, viruses, rootkits, and other malicous attacks. Running separate applications for viruses, hackers, adware, and spyware can slow your PC, be difficult to manage, and provide questionable protection. Beware of large, bloated internet security suites that consume hundreds of megabytes on your PC. These typically exist because vendors have acquired products and 'bundled' them together. In contrast, Eset NOD32 was designed from the core as a single, highly-optimized engine to stop malware.

Protection against threats from multiple input vectors is provided by the following modules:

* Antivirus MONitor (AMON). An on-access (memory-resident) scanner, which automatically scans files before they're accessed.

* NOD32. An on-demand scanner, which can be run manually on specific files or disk segments. It can also be scheduled to run during off-peak times.

* Internet MONitor (IMON). A memory-resident scanner that runs on the Winsock level to prevent infected files from reaching the computer's disks. Its scans internet web browsing traffic (http) and incoming e-mail via the POP3 protocol.

* E-mail MONitor (EMON). An auxiliary module for scanning incoming/outgoing e-mails via the MAPI interface, such as Microsoft Outlook Microsoft Exchange.

* Document MONitor (DMON). Utilizes the proprietary Microsoft API for scanning Microsoft Office documents (including Internet Explorer).

kerio 2.1.5 is a great rules based FW, if you search for 'BZ rule set', that's a good replacement set of rules which are more secure. you do need to understand IP protocols though to make the rules!

antivir is a good AV, and

BOclean is a very good free anti-trojan program. it was the best for a long time and shareware too, but i think it was recently sold and made free.

superantispyware is a good anti-spyware program

you also need an application FW. if you aren't a windows expert then get Cyberhawk, if you know about windows processes then SSM is very good. PrevX is good too

also, there's a great program called SandboxIE, you can tell programs to run inside it i.e. your browser then if you come across malware while using your browser it won't be able to get in to your system. however, if you download something you want to keep you can right-click SandboxIE in the tray and tell it to take the download out of the sandbox.

SafeXP, hardenit and securit are great hardening programs too.

EDIT. BTW all the programs are free. Cyberhawk starts out as the full paid version, but after a week or so, changes to the free version

G0053, the forum i use most has the Official ESET Support Forum. i don't think they'll like you posting cracks for their software!

only an idiot would use cracked security software anyway.

Get partitionmagic to make a specific partition. Then get TrueCrypt to encrypt it and after you do that pour everything into it. Makes things a little more hectic but how important is security to you?

Get Tor as a simple method of covering your tracks. Albeit not the most secure, at least it does something.

The new Lavasoft 2007 just came out.

If you download make sure you use Peerguardian 2. At least it blocks known questionable IPs.

Add WPA encryption, and disallow the WiFi router Admin panel to users on WiFi, and see if you could put all WiFi users on a separate virtual lan which is separated from the wired network...

BlackICE would work great for you man. It had a good firewall in it, plus tells you when intruders are trying to enter. It will label it as serious attack, critical attack, ect. Then it will tell you their ip and dns. Then options to trust intruder, trust and accept, block for an hour, day, week, month, or forever.
