Guy installs 3,000 trojans; catches predator.

21 posts in this topic

The mystery hacker whose online infiltration has led to several arrests of suspected child predators -- including a California superior court judge -- was a 19-year-old loner who penetrated 3,000 computers around the world from his parents' basement in Langley, B.C.

In all of this, the Canadian hacker has remained anonymous, even in police affidavits -- until now.

Dubbed "Citizen Tipster" by police, Brad Willman, spent night after night writing a Trojan Horse program that gave him complete control over every computer that downloaded it.

Alone and in the dark, he sat for up to 16 hours a day monitoring hundreds of targets, secretly reading their e-mail and tracking their every step online.

He started keeping files on the targeted users. He tracked them for almost three years --recording everything. The majority of his targets were ordinary people -- but some in the files included priests, social workers, soldiers, police officers and justice officials.

He catalogued each file by degree of risk and focused on suspected child-porn producers and molesters.

This was his life. He had no friends in school and skipped the prom. Even these days, his only entertainment away from the computer is going to the odd movie, alone.

The son of a coffee shop owner, Mr. Willman, a.k.a. Omni-Potent, finds if hard to socialize and rarely answers the telephone. He can only be himself online -- staring at the screen and chewing sour candies.

Though never publicly credited, Omni-Potent is the same mystery hacker who led the Mounties to the capture and conviction of an Alberta man who offered his eight-year-old daughter up for sex through the Internet in 1999.

Good thing he wasn't an American... The US goverment would have put him, the hacker, in prison for life while letting the pedophiles walk.

If he was in the UK he would have destroyed any chance of a conviction, as he would have made any evidences not admissible in a court of law. With a good lawyer / solicitor I’m pretty sure any paedophile could get off in nearly any country. The guys heart was in the right place and at least the police will know who to keep an eye on but it would be very easy to get out of going to prison.

hhmmm, even if the result of his actions was a good one I can't say that I agree with his actions.

I wouldn't want a trojan in my machine with the reason for it being that they would be monitoring everyone while looking for pedophiles!

Big brother alert!!

What a typical media portrayal of hackers. Even as hero, the hacker is still depicted as a socially-impaired creep.

<_<

So you object to it even if it happens to be true in this case? And most of the 'hackers' that I knew pretty much fit the stereotype quite well.

Let's face facts, your not really elite if you spent 4 nights a week at a party and spent the days out at a basketball court. Can you be a geek, or whatever, sure. You probably aren't shellcoding and posting to F.D. though if you didn't spend those years being pretty socially backward. Owning pedos has pretty much been a pastime since the usenet and bbs days. So the guy bent and broke rules. He found a fucking judge that put people in jail, while being a damn hypocrite. That's the outrage.

The program, disguised as an image, allowed him to retrieve anything -- undetected -- once downloaded. He posted the image on several usenet groups used by pedophiles. In reality, the downloaded image was simply one retrieved from the user's own hard drive
remember something like that happening to me hmm....., i think it was an msn variant idk

The l33t hackers do usually tend to be the socially akward.

I think thats mostly because socially adept hackers become social engineers.

In my experience, hackers and computer security experts, come from all walks of life :)...I just happen to be the active / future jarhead type.

Yeah I agree. I hate those stereotypes. If by definition a hacker is a guy or girl who loves technology and loves learning new things, has a healthy curiosity about how things work, loves to solve problems and craves challenges, what's to say they also have to be a total loner with no social skills?

I rather think that description lends itself more to the negative stereotype of a snivelly, creepy criminal who uses his tech abilities to lash out at society because he can't get laid.

People, the MEDIA in general, need to learn the difference b/w a hacker and a cracker..doubtful it will happen anytime soon though.
