5 posts in this topic

I scanned an ip address and it saids all ports are filter? Is it true that they are filter or is the target box behind some firewall?

To be exact, when you get filtered, it means that the port is being protected by some sort of firewall, thus nmap can't tell weather the port is open or closed.

It depends on the type of scan. Assuming a normal SYN scan, no response was received at all. No SYN/ACK (open) or RST (closed) was received, so somewhere along the lines the packet was dropped. Where exactly you can't really tell without some more probing (hping comes in handy here). The TTL field can tell you if a router or firewall between you and the host is dropping the packet if you can manage to get some response from the host itself. Also, some other types of scans or probes can get past less sophisticated firewalls.

I don't think thats going to help, it only prevents nmap from pinging to see if the host is up before scanning. If nmap can't ping the host, it will go onto the next, -P0 makes it scan w/o pinging first. It looks like the OP was able to scan the target in question. -P0 will only help if the firewall blocks ping requests but doesn't have a feature to make the ports appear filtered.
