Scam?

7 posts in this topic

I do part-time computer support with Tech-7 (hxxp://www.tech-7.com) repairing computers etc., well I posted an ad on Craigslist and I've gotten some calls, but I got one call from a guy who said he was from a company called NW MAP (hxxp://www.nwmap.com) who said that if I referred people to their company I'd get 30% out of the deal if the customer signed up for their service.

To me, this doesn't seem right, and most of the stuff they do I don't really understand, since I'm not all that technological with phones etc., which is what they do apparently. After speaking with him on the phone as he explained himself, I asked if he could send me the details to my e-mail, which he did. Here is the e-mail:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to talk with me today. Below is some information on MAP (Master Agent Program).

General Info:

Lennie and I (Brian) work with MAP. We specialize in providing Vendors like yourself with pricing, service, and voice/data solutions for your clients. We don’t offer any other services besides carrier’s sales so we don’t compete with our partners. There are three plans offered for commission; 1.Warm referral leads at 30%, 2.Verbally close (get a yes) with our proposal 50%, 3.Propose, close sale and do all the paper work 80% ( we train you). Commissions are paid to our partners on all received commissions for life of client and carrier paying MAP. Our agency is set up differently then any other master agent program by having a CPA receive all the commissions and to distribute commissions to all our partners. We want to guarantee to our partners that they would be paid for life of client and life of carrier (ever green clause).

Our referral programs offer either at 30% or 50% of all commission for life of client and life of carrier paying. We are either paid up front, partially up front with residual or all straight residual from all our carriers. There is no quota to fulfill to be a referral partner or agent. The program is 30% for straight warm leads that the client is expecting us to call. The Agent program is at 50% for getting a proposal from us, presenting, and verbally selling the opportunity to the client and getting a yes. This requires more work on your end. In either of the first two cases we make the proposal, do all the paperwork, and all project management. We also work on account maintenance as needed. There is one more option but that requires you to do all the work at 80%. I have noticed that the most reward for the least amount of effort is the referral partner, allowing you to do what you do best. We send checks out to you once a month. All our commissioning and tax papers come from our accounting company, Iverson & Spitzer CPA.

Please look at each of the links above for the various carriers if you are not familiar with them. We have been selling these services since 1997 and have both CLEC and Telephone Equipment back ground. Eric the partner has also been in the industry for many years too. He used to be the IT Director for GST Telecom (now Time Warner). I recently joined the team coming with many years experience in both the telecom and ISP fields. We have many referral partners and agents like yourself that market their own companies but get access to these carriers too. We would like for you to also join our team. Please let us know what questions you have? I can send you an agreement, but I will need to know what name you want on the agreement and the mailing address to send it to.

Thank you again for taking the time to talk with me and also the time to read this e-mail, hope you have a good day.

Now, I live around Portland, Oregon. I asked to setup a meeting, to see if they actually have some sort of office or something. I know I wouldn't lose any money by referring people to them, but if I were to refer people to them and they got scammed or something by some shady company, I wouldn't like to be in the middle of it, and I wouldn't like to see any of my customers get scammed.

If anyone can shed some light on this, please help, or fill me in with some details on what exactly they do.

Thanks :P

In other words, he would give you 30% on a vague service if you refer people that pay for his service?

This is vague. If he doesn't reply, just don't re-contact him...

I would suggest taking one of the companies listed as ones they work for, and asking about the legitimacy of this post. If it turns out to be no good, contact craigslist, and do the community a favor.

I agree with alienbinary. Although, you never know, they could be fake clients, I wouldn’t put it past a scammer to try and cover all bases to look legit ;s

Have you asked around abit? I suggest trying to get some information on them from some trusty source.
