Learning C

5 posts in this topic

Alright, I took a C++ class in HS, and as one might have guessed, it was useless. I managed to pick up syntax and structure and everything, so I can read C quite well, but now I'm at a point where being able to code something other than PHP or perl would be nice. I'm looking for a good tutorial to take me through basics, all the way up to low level memory stuff, and socket programming.

Any links or suggestions would be hugly appreciated.

Thanks a ton, you guys rock.

I was in your same exact position. First I suggest taking AP Computer Science AB. Even if you just go out and buy a study guide for the test and study yourself, you'll learn a lot of the basics. Next, go on sourceforge and look for a fairly simple project that needs developers. Talk to the admin of the project and ask if he wouldn't mind a newbie sneaking a peak at the development process and helping out on some of the simplier things. Other then that, just google for "C tutorials" and read them. Books are good. I'm particularly fond of SAMS publishing.

I'd go out and borrow "The C programming language" By Kernginhan and Richie, make sure it's revised ANSI one as some syntax has changed from the old book...

Just to help push our planned IRC lecture, check out the post in the code section.
