To evaluate Linux, I would suggest downloading Knoppix, which is a Linux LiveCD, a Linux distribution that fits on one CD-ROM and allows you to evaluate Linux without committing to a hard drive installation. Download the ISO image at ftp://csociety-ftp.ecn.purdue.edu/pub/kno...05-09-23-EN.iso and burn it to a CD-R, but make sure to burn the ISO as a CD image.

Ok, I'm trying to put this in a way that is not a flame. If you can't Google and find a place to download a Linux distro from you may want to stay away from BackTrack till you understand computers and Linux better.

I was about to say that.

I used to consider myself to be a computer expert until I tried linux, now I just feel like a moron. Seriously, if you cant use google then linux will probably be hard for you.

Good luck though.

Download this:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/dist/knoppix/KNO...05-09-23-EN.iso

(right-click save file as)

I just copied this from an iso burning how-to. I don't use nero much, but it looks OK to me:

(download a demo from ftp://ftp4.usw.nero.com/software/nero7/Nero-7.0.5.4_eng.exe if you don't already have it) I think IE can download using ftp. I forget. Use firefox if it can't.

1. Start Nero

2. Choose the menu command "File"->"Burn Image"

3. An "Open" file dialog box appears with the following image types supported (*.nrg, *.iso, *.cue)

4. Select your download LinuxISO file and click Open

5. The "Write CD" dialog box appears with several tabs (Info, Foreign image, Misc, Burn).

6. Click the 'Burn' Tab

7. Confirm that 'Write' and 'Finalize' are selected

8. Click on "Write". Watch it burn.

Just for those who don't know, google actually has a linux specific search that's really helpful if you're looking for answers to something

http://www.google.com/linux/

has a nice penguin and everything

Takeoff the last slash otherwise you get an Error- object not found

http://www.google.com/linux

There we go.

Hence that post.

That site is more useful to kernel hackers than to people who are new to Linux.

or those that want to update and compile a new version of their kernel

Just do what most Linux n00bZ like myself do. Get a copy of the Knoppix STD, go to irongeek.com, and play with that until you can get a good feel of what your doing, Pester your friend Bizurke for a shell, and learn how to really mess around! I learned alot just running the Live CDs, and there is really no risk to your computer! If you get frustrated, reboot back into windows, and cool off.
