SAM File Cracker (Linux tool)?

5 posts in this topic

I have Linux running now and been switching back and forth between mandrake and slackware....

Anyway, I'm looking for a good tool that can crack SAM files. Everytime I google for a Linux SAM File Cracker , I just get results on how to grab the SAM file using a Linux bootup disk such as Knoppix and then cracking it with a windows program.

I wish John the Ripper could extract the LM, NT, NTLM hashes from the SAM file and crack them but I'm affraid it doesn't do that.

If you don't need to actually know the password, but would just like to reset the Admin/any other account password, there's a Linux live cd called "Emergency Boot CD" (EBCD) that includes an option for resetting passwords through the hashes. You download it, and it comes in several pieces, which compile to a burnable image (this must be done under Windows, for some reason). I think the compiling from bits has to do with the nature of the software, and that it comes from Russia!
