Theater owners want cell phones blocked

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The National Association of Theater Owners wants the Federal Communications Commission to allow the blocking of cell phone signals in theaters.

John Fithian, the president of the trade organization, told the Los Angeles Times theater owners "have to block rude behavior" as the industry tries to come up with ways to bring people back to the cinemas.

Fithian said his group would petition the FCC for permission to block cell phone signals within movie theaters.

Some theaters already have no cell phone policies and ask moviegoers to check their phones at the door, Fithian said.

The Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association -- a Washington-based cell phone lobby that is also known as CTIA-the Wireless Association -- said it would fight any move to block cell phone signals.

"We're opposed to the use of any blocking technology, because it interferes with people's ability to use a wireless device in an emergency situation," CTIA spokesman Joseph Farren told the Times.

While this can be both good and bad, I'd be happy with it because I'm tired of someone blabbing on their phone while I pay $10 to hear them talk about something I could really give a flying fuck about.

While the brute-force approach is one method, I think it would be a better idea to kick people out who use their phones in the theater.

Kinda goes into the same category of banning cell phones and cameras inside movie theaters just to prevent screener captures from getting on the internet.

Can we also maybe kick out the annoying group of 20 giggling 13 year old girls?

I hope cell phone signals do not start to be allowed to be blocked so easily, why cant a responsible person have his phone on, on vibrate, waiting for a call in the theater, and then take it outside when he gets it. People may need to be reached in an emergency, which is why many people carry cell phones.

I remember theatres used to have a thing before the previews reminding people to turn their cell phones off. I liked this, because sometimes I would forget and this would remind me. But they don't use this tactic anymore (at least in my local theatre), probably because they used that time to run commercials.

However, I'm one of the people that thinks this is a good idea, as long as they let people know that their shit won't work past a certain point in the theatre. Also, they need to lock that shit down so people don't crank up the signal on it (or whatever) so then people in the parking lot can't use their phone.

If people were responsible, this wouldn't be an issue at all.

I don't believe I said everybody was responsible. What I did say is that responsible people have legitimate and acceptable reasons to be able to receive a cell signal inside a movie theater.

cell phones in theaters are not a bad thing, there are such things as emergencies. what they need to do, is before a movie, show a fun clip about people using their phones responsibly, by going into the hallway when their phone vibrates. if a phone goes off or if they are playing with it, have someone escort them out of the theater and if the person causes any trouble, just stop the film for a minute. with the high prices of movie tickets, people will not do this intentionally as it costs $$ and if you embarass the teenage girls they will make sure and not do it again.

what theaters need to be doing is not petitioning the fcc about cell phones and blocking them, but to get off their asses and do something about the rude people in the theater themselves.

now that out of me, yes i do tell people in the theater to quit using their damn phones and it usually embarases people enough to quit. and we all need to petition the theaters owners association to quit playing fucking commercials at the movie. i pay $20+ for my wife and i to see a movie, why should i have to watch more commercials? fuck that.

Cereal, don't know about your local theater, but I've been to plenty of different places in the Northeast. Practically every one I go to has a cell phone reminder prior to the movie. It's just that people are ridiculously rude and ignore it. I've seen people still yapping as the reminder is being played. What I need to figure out is a way to put a little interference in there. Perhaps a handheld device that could put a little squeel in their ear ;)
