BITTORRENT USER SENTENCED FOR TRADING MOVIES

A court in Hong Kong has sentenced a citizen there to three months in

prison for illegally distributing movies online. Chan Nai-ming was

found guilty of making three movies available on his computer with

BitTorrent tools and then, under the name Big Crook, of notifying

Internet users that the movies were available for download. The case is

the first in which a user of the BitTorrent technology has been found

guilty of copyright infringement, and the case also represents Hong

Kong's stepped up efforts to prosecute file-sharing crimes. The

country is seen by many as a haven for intellectual-property crimes, a

reputation the Hong Kong government hopes to shed. Government officials

applauded the verdict and the sentence, saying they would deter others

from committing similar crimes. Chan's lawyer said his client would

appeal the verdict. Chan remains free on bail while the legal action

continues.

3. He was living in China.

People disappear all the time in that country. It's a fact of life that you'll probably be killed if you're a Chinese citizen.

Oh, and...LARGE CAPITAL LETTERS CAPTURE YOUR ATTENTION!

Ah I see, so tons of people can just sit selling burnt pirated dvds on the street in China, but when they do it with bittorrent it becomes a real crime  ironic. Its the guys own fault, you should have just stayed selling burnt dvds to random people on the street corner buddy but NO, you had to get ahold of this "bittorrent" program :P

It is china that people sell pirated dvds on the side of the street right? I don't have it mixed up with some other country right?

That is any major city in the world, I've seen it in Manhatten. However, China does not submit to WIPO, so it is interesting that they gave a shit in the first place (they were probably bought by the MPAA, for all I know).

China bought by the MPAA? haha. Something they'd probly do.

I know they pirate tons of stuff in mexico, selling it on the streets.

I was on a mission trip and they were trying to sell me porno dvds.

It's China! What about the dudes standing outside SELLING bootlegs?

Sure, it's bullshit. And it looks like he's becoming a "deterrent" for other pirates. Some would say he's responsible for his own actions, and I would say that is true. But you almost never expect to be arrested for downloading or even distributing a movie, illegal or otherwise.

Most of the bootlegs come from synapore, When I was there you are able to buy dvd's, vhs, audio cds and computer software. There quality of disk design is pretty good also from what i seen to bad i did not buy any.

im adding that to my sig also ;)

That sentencing is almost enough to make me want to move to China. Once they get over the whole "speak against us and die" government thing.

Actually Russia is the worst. About 3 out of 4 sales are for pirated software there (this is according to the BSA).

You don't want to go to a Chinese prison. You shouldn't want to go to prison at all, so don't do illegal stuff. Russian prisons aren't any better. US prisons are like a resort compared to most other countries prisons.

Note: I'm NOT speaking from experience here.

Russia? NOOOO!!..... Oh wait.. I'm in the US.. No problem.. :)

And China makes people do hard labor or at least cane the shit out of them..

Damn thing about buying Russian DVD's is they don't always work.. or maybe that's just Russian porn.. Much like their military.. fix? Feed it a little vodka, conac and give it a few smokes.. works fine...

On a side note.. just be careful what your downloading.. but i think in the long run the MPAA might have problems making this kind of thing stick.. Must like copying VHS tapes in the 80's (Fuck i'm getting old) they get pissed but can't find a way to stop it.. Or they make stupid fucking mistakes (Stupid mistake -- > see Sony)
