The title says it all.

What are proxies and how do I use them?

As a noob I'd like to learn as much as I can and, I've heard a little about proxies. They seem pretty interesting.

A proxy is sort of an Internet middleman.

Let's say you're surfing the Internet, and you don't want the operator of the website you're visiting to be able to identify you. Then what you would do is use a proxy. You would pass on all the information to the proxy, the proxy would fetch the data off the questionable website or whatever, and pass all transactions back you.

Then when the website operator would look through their logs, they would see that someone else (the proxy) visited the site. Not you.

The real challenge is finding one that will actually fetch the web page ;)

I believe Tor with Privoxy can be used in the same way.

Personally I have always found the tor/privoxy combination to make for the best proxies. It's always running (disclaimer 99.9%) and it really does randomize where your coming from ever few minutes (new IP address from somewhere in the world). Data leaves your computer encrypted, then passes along a few other computers encrypted and is decrypted and sent out by your final link, then sent to the webpage/whatever it is your connecting to.

Of course the price you pay is speed. Tor is not known for it's lightning fast transfer speeds ;)

Tor is more complicated than that. http://tor.eff.org/overview.html.en

There is no challange in finding a proxy  <_< There are lots of pages like www.proxy4free.com

I said *working* proxies, ie ones that don't transfer files to you at .5 kbps.

Those do work, but since there's a few million linkspammers out there using them to advertise James Woods' Irradiated Platinum Goatse Replicas, they're slow as hell.

I try to use proxies when ever its necessary but the problem is that ALOT of proxies die out after a while..or even after a couple of days... And trying to find good reliable proxies 3-4 times every week can be VERY annoying....and because of this Most people

'forget' to use proxies.....sort of a DoS attack on your self...

The best thing to do would be to run nmap and try to find open proxies on your own. Just keep them to yourself and they'll stay up and running longer.

Use TOR, it never goes down.

Well, don't use it if you live in a 3rd world country where your download speed is never higher than 15K/s :growl:

Guess what? You can "speed" TOR up! If you download the FasterFox extension for FF and set it to "Turbo Charged", you can load most pages over TOR/Privoxy in under 6 seconds. FasterFox even gives you a little display in the status bar to show how long it took to load the page and this replay page itself took 5.170s to load over Privoxy. It's definitely worth the download.

This is actually a good excersize for the use of Nmap, as in another post.

If you Nmap www.2600.com you will find port 8080 opened as "http - proxy"

Anyone else ever do this?

So what do you guys prefer using TOR? or Proxy4free.com ? I have been thinking about getting into hacking now that i finished my CCNA course. I am currently reading up on proxies, and would like your opinions on this matter thanks.

You can also set up chains of proxies to try and increase you anonymity. Tools such as proxychains and sockschains are capable of this.

I would refrain from using services from Proxy4free.com or 0mgFreeproxiez.com (similar) because they can't verify the security of every proxy they link to.

What would keep someone from creating an "evil" proxy sever (maybe one that records all the data passing through) and having the link posted to one of those

Super Mega Ultimate Proxy List sites?

I tend to use CGI proxies hosted from a website that I trust.
