Harmless hackers or criminals?

14 posts in this topic

This is what happens when you put education majors in charge. :) I work at a university and a lot of folks who go through the education department are dim bulbs. Assuming the kids’ story is truthful, it seems like damn harsh punishment. Why can’t the school just nuke and rebuild the laptops each semester and not worry about it?

Shitty, I wish the media would one day call cracking, cracking! and not hacking.. It's becoming hurtful.

felony is kinda harsh for what they did. they didnt do anything like malicious or anything. but even still, they got detentions and shit, so they had fair warning. the admins were actually being nice in that they could have just called the cops right away, skipping all other forms of punishment. and if your gonna download porn, why do it at school??? all in all a stupid idea and whatever punishment they get will serve as a lesson teaching them not to be idiots in the future.

I've said this before, but where the fuck is Kutztown getting the money to give these kids laptops? Kutztown is not a nice area, I'd venture to say it's broke ass.

And as for kids putting those malicious hacker programs like iChat on their computers, they're just kids, so what. There is nothing malicious about these kids.

They did'nt bother telling the administrators that there was an issue they just bitched about temptation,'I cant resist the temptation to hax0r j00r n3twerk" sort of thing which I assume the administration ruled it out as "Oh, they're just kids trying to look cool". Now it is like they are a whole bunch of martyrs. Bullshit they're site takes no responsiblity for they're actions. Now they want to make money off it. Now in all reality I doubt they will even be convicted. It is a bullshit charge but they need to accept some responsibilty and are entitled to the consequences of their actions.

What were these kids doing that made themselves so apparent to the IT staff? Their skills are obviously lackluster if they were modifying windows for their exploits, rather than just running a Linux Bootable distrobution like Whoppix from iWhax. Either way they go caught and now they have to face the consequences for their actions. However harsh the consequences are. I would like to point out that these children are not crackers for it seems that they caused no real damage to school computer systems. They just gave the IT guys a hard time  something that I bet most of us are quite familiar with!

Obviously these aren't incredibly skilled hackers, just kids with some computer knowledge and the ability to google. But in their situation I would have done the same thing and hacked the shit out of those boxes and the school or as far as the administrators' ineptitude took me... but I wouldn't have gotten caught.

Anyone who allows his own individual will to be subservient to a mere human system, whether it be called the "law", public opinion, or a computer, is a slave. The system has no rights.
