WiFi Positioning System

8 posts in this topic

Due to my regular full-time job, I don't have the time to do this [Slashdot article], but for people out of school or with a few weeks to kill, this sounds like a cool idea, and it'll get you out of the house.

I wrote to the e-mail address provided and got the following response:

We are looking for drivers that are familiar with the metro area to

drive large sections of the city in order to passively gather wireless

information. This is a full time position that should last for 3-5

weeks.

We are conducting a study of wi-fi hotspot coverage and are paying

people to literally drive on every street and cross street in defined

sections of the downtown area. Drivers will be provided with a wi-fi

scanning device and high-level maps with specific areas of the city to

be targeted. There are no stops, just driving and letting the device

scan. Drivers should understand the following:

- This is difficult work and requires a systematic approach to

properly map city coverage

- Drivers must commit to 40 hours a week

- Drivers should have their own detailed maps in order to "highlight"

the roads they have covered

- Drivers must have car in good working order

- Some technological knowledge helpful

If interested please go to

http://www.quarterscope.com/dev/Driver_App.htm

And complete the registration process. We need this information in

order to consider you for the position. We expect to assign the

project within the next week.

Thanks

Well, on the application form, they request your SSN (for tax reasons, of course), which leads me to believe...

$$$!!! (Probably not much, but hey.)

I am a huge privacy advocate, but I am now a 30 year old privacy advocate. Unless you plan on working "off the books", you need to give that # to an employer. You don't need to give it on the application though. Just leave it off the application, until they hire you. if it won't accept it or go through, give a # that is 1 or two digits off and say it was a typo. Correct it after being hired.

Sounds like a cool gig. Don't let that snn thing throw you off, just fake it for a while, and correct it later after your sure it's a real job.

EDIT: I have signed up (Orlando) and will keep you all posted. Here is what I put under qualifications. I hope I didn't come across too blatantly as a wardriver.

I am a skilled PC technician who has just moved to Florida. I worked for **********

******* for just under a year setting up home wired, and wireless networks. I also have experience driving and scouting for wireless connectivity with laptops and external antennas. I also have my own equipment for such a project.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

***** *******

Here is the driver contract which is step 2:

That's some pretty good cash! Not for a full-time gig, but for something you'd be doing anyway, hell yeah! :D Uncle Sam'll take about a third of it... :growl: so that's about $1,200 you can keep all told, depending on state taxes and such. I'm trying to think of a way I can squeeze it in without losing my "me time."
