rudeness to telemarketers

38 posts in this topic

IF miss manners says it is right, then it has GOT to be true...

Dear Miss Manners,

I am a telesurveyor (we do not sell anything) in Canada and have been making calls to the USA recently. The people on the East Coast and in the Southern states do not have a clue how to be polite on the phone or use proper phone etiquette. I realize the nature of the business causes people to be upset and irascible but in the States the people are particularly vulgar and rude. In contrast, when I make calls up north the disposition and demeanor changes 180 degrees. I know Canadians are always referred to as being polite but why is there such a difference?

---

Gentle Reader,

Being polite is always good, Miss Manners assures you, no matter where you live. She just hopes you realize that it is not polite to telephone strangers at home when they have shown no interest in hearing from you.

This is no excuse for their being vulgar or rude in return, she agrees. But neither are they obliged to hear you out. She hopes that you are not counting it as rude when people simply terminate the call by saying that they are not interested.

inotherwords...tell them to FUKK OFF!! Ok, maybe i paraphrased a bit... ^_^

True I've noticed some canadians are far more polite than americans...hell I once found myself about to turn the wrong way down a one way street, and one woman stopped in the middle of the road, smiled, and directed me in the right direction.

I do have one question though, are telemarketers as big of a problem in canada as they are down here? Are canadians used to the phone ringing three times when they're trying to eat their vinegar and fries and trying to enjoy their ice cold pop? Americans are, and frankly we're sick of it.

around my area we don't normally get called more than once or twice a month, and thats only if you've signed up/donated to/for some type of charity.

but i can imagine it wouldn't be too hard for that nonsense to get rolling

i don't get much harrassment here in Quebec .However Quebec, and Canada in general is the source of a large amount of fradulent telemarketing, you know ripping of old ladies by telling them that they won the lottery, and other such scams. The reason for this is that we have very lax laws against that sort of thing, and they usually target people that live overseas, or in the states.

Telemarketers are annoying and have no right to call me at 10am when Im just getting to bed, If you didnt ask for them to call you why should they have the right to call you and try to sell you something by lieing to you and talking fast as if you are a stupid moron that is confused easly and buys something as a defualt responce when confused.. its demeaning and insulting, frankly I love to fuck with telemarketers, make them WORK for that final hangup after I make sure to take up as much as there time as possable.. if only to make them as mad as possble so they burst out at there next caller after Im done making there day as bad as possable, true suffering is calling me and trying to sell me something.. I may not have the money to buy, but I can sure as hell amke them want to pay me to let them go. :D

I dont think of it as disrespectful, after all its there job to call me, so its my job to keep them on the line, so in the end Im doing them a favor.

If you've ever seen the movie "Boiler Room," there is an excellent scene where the main character (Who does telemarketing for a stock firm) gets a call from a telemarketer... It's really funny when he says he's not interested and the telemarketer says "Thank you for your time" just as he goes to hang up, the main character starts saying "What, your gonna give up on me like that!?" and then just totally schools him on selling shit over the phone. Then ends up telling him to fuck off and hangs up...

I've been getting LOADS of telemarketing calls on my business line lately. This morning, the damn phone rang at 6:15AM! My office is right next to my bedroom, and it fucking woke me up. It could have been a wrong number, but I doubt it, since I did a *69 and got one of those "the number you are trying to dial can not reached by this method" messages.

The kicker is, that 99% of the calls I've been getting are those damn automated things, so I don't even get the chance to be rude. Today it was Michelle, calling to inform me about the great deals for me and my family on Disney cruises. YEAH...and I suppose I can take a cruise and watch one of your 48 hour lifespan DVDs before I fling it overboard when it expires.

I've been hanging up on these calls but guess I'll start trying to get a phone number to call, so I CAN be rude to someone and tell them to fuckign stop calling me. :pissed:

I wonder if this? could be a reason that people are rude to telemarkers...

Telemarket firm fired by Qwest for menacing call

By Kris Hudson, Denver Post Business Writer

Qwest on Wednesday fired a Utah telemarketing firm whose representative left a threatening, expletive-laden message on an Evergreen couple's voice mail this week.

Qwest canceled its contract with Salt Lake City-based Teleperformance USA following media coverage and law-enforcement inquiries about the threatening message left after the Evergreen man hung up on the telemarketer. Qwest initially hired Teleperformance USA in December 2001.

"We terminated our contract," Qwest spokeswoman Rebecca Tennille said. "Basically, we're outraged at the behavior of the employee. Once we were notified, we immediately started working with the customer and local authorities."

The events leading to the firm's firing began with the telemarketer's call at midday Monday to the home phone of an Evergreen couple. The couple, Mike and Mindy, asked The Denver Post that their last name not be published because of safety concerns. They both work from home.

Mike picked up the phone and heard a sales pitch for Qwest long-distance service. He said he asked the caller if he could sell Qwest high-speed Internet service, also called digital subscriber line, or DSL, because the service had not been available in Mike's area.

When the caller said only Qwest itself could sell DSL, Mike told him not to call back until he could sell DSL, Mike said. He then hung up.

"I didn't raise my voice or anything," Mike said Wednesday.

Minutes later, Mindy listened to the voice mail on the couple's home line and heard an angry message riddled with curses and a threat.

"Yeah, did you understand that?" the caller said. "(Expletive) hanging up on somebody like that again. (Expletive) I'm coming in your (expletive) house, you (expletive). What the (expletive) you gonna do? I'll (expletive) kill you."

Mindy went to Mike.

"She was shaking and crying," Mike said. "She said, 'You need to listen to this message. I'm scared. I don't know what's going on.' I listened to it, and immediately I recognized this guy's voice."

The couple called Qwest and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, which continues to investigate the call. The story was first reported Tuesday by 9News' Chip Yost.

Mike said a Qwest manager looked into the matter and later told him the company found two calls, one from the telemarketing center and another two minutes later from a cellphone. Qwest declined to confirm that. Teleperformance USA said it fired the man involved.

"Teleperformance USA strives to maintain the highest standards of professionalism at all times," spokesman Steve Perring said in a statement sent by e-mail Wednesday. "The individual in question has been subject to disciplinary action and no longer works for the company. The company regrets any distress caused by the incident and will extend its full cooperation to any investigation by the authorities."

Perring did not return a phone message seeking comment.

Christina Duffney, a spokesman for the Direct Marketing Association in Washington, D.C., said the group has no record of a previous incident like that experienced by Mike and Mindy.

"It's very rare that an incident like that will occur," she said. "So rare that we don't have any facts or statistics on it."

Mike praised the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Qwest for their quick response to the problem. But he said he is frustrated that no one can tell him the caller's name, and that police have not yet told him the man will be arrested or questioned.

"Basically, I want this guy off the street," Mike said.

Jim Shires, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, said police know the caller's name.

"Our deputy is trying to get more information, such as a date of birth and address," Shires said. "The investigation will continue with the Jeffco Sheriff's Office making contact with him and possibly issuing him a summons, which would be a charge of harassment. We also are going to (contact) the FBI to see if some type of federal regulation has been broken by using a telecommunications device crossing state lines."

Exactly.. telemarketers rudly invade your house via the phone and call to prostitute themselvs and the services and products they are under contract to pimp without regard on if you even want to be asked.. they should take the abuse they recieave with a grain of salt secure in the knowledge that at least they didnt get there butt beat, as with a good portion of america if they had done the same thing on a door to door basis they would have.

If your going to pimp products, at least know your customer base and be able to be a people person about it.... then again Im most likely the wrong person to rant about pimping... lol

being rude will never stop them, they do not communicate with each other and warn about rude people. At best, you might stop one company from repeated calls, but they do not share information on who not to call.

I would love to think I just made them feel like there calls where not welcome, but as much as I hate to say it I belive that they simply said to themselves "Hey he doesnt fit this market, lets just sell his info to the other lists we have so they can find something he would buy" :(

I find that more often than not, you HAVE to be rude in order to get the point across that you are simply not interested in what they are selling, and that you do not want to be disturbed. I'm still getting lots of these fukkers calling on my business line. MCI was one of the worst for not taking "no" for an answer. Just telling them NO is often not enough. I usually end up saying, "What part of I'M NOT INTERESTED do you not understand?". Then I tell them to take me off their call list.

the few calls i recieved didn't last long

i'd ask about the callcenter they worked for, and then asked to be taken off of that callcenters list. sometimes id ask to talk with a supervisor and repeat my questions. or if i was in a fun mood i'd ask about their equiptment.

ya I get the MCI thing.. they call and and wont take no for a answer.. usualy I just tell them to "fuck off, no Im not interested damn you", and hang up.. I have to admit I would rather be blasting a foghorn or something into the phone.. them calling pisses me off, and that would take out there ears and they wouldnt be able to call people for the rest of the day; I have it on good authority that if you blast a loud enough sound into the phone line of somone wearing a standard issue telemarketer headset , that persons ears will bleed and that person will not eb able to ehar for a short time, and thats what we the consumer need to do, have no pity for them.. I just wish I had the resources to do that or I would be doing so.

Not that Im saying you should break the law but there has to be a legal way to do that...

That reminds me of a friend of mine, Who was visited too often by the Jehovas Witness.... when he'd see them on his porch he'd fire up a porno, and when they knocked he'd invite them in... politly ask them to have a seat on the couch next to him where he proceded to get down with his bad self....
