Does Gmail watch for "hacker" keywords?

30 posts in this topic

In this thread of Bracket's, his Gmail account was locked down for 24 hours because according to him his emails contain hacker keywords. He does not use the account in any abnormal way. This leaves only one possible explanation, they are monitoring the contents of emails for purposes other than advertising.

It is hard to know anything for sure at this point so lets do some testing. I've set up the following Gmail account

testingkeyworddetection@gmail.com

Your task is to send emails to this address that contain lots and lots of "hacking" related keywords. I will try to reply to most of them with more keywords.

We are trying to look very evil to Gmail's keyword monitoring software if it does indeed exist. Hopefully it will suspend this account.

Here are some example keywords to use, feel free to come up with more:

hacker, cracking, cracks, warez, appz, iso, divx, xvid, passwords, porn, boobies, phreaking, war driving, wep cracking, exploits, linux, apache, nmap, bittorrent, torrent, pirated software, bukkake

Some other things to send are

1. hacking/phreaking textfiles

2. fake file attachments with names like "photoshop-crack.zip". PLEASE do not send real files. Just rename some stupid picture or something.

3. Links to hacking/phreaking sites

Please post lists of keywords for others to use. This should be a fun experiment. Lets ownzor up some Gmail. Yeehaw.

**Consider anything you send to testingkeyworddetection@gmail.com as public knowledge, except for your email address. I may post an archive of received messages as part of a final write up of this experiment.***

I like the idea of testing the gmail e-mail monitoring system, if in fact they do scan e-mails for purposes other than advertisement it is not as reliable or private as they make it seem.

I sent an email to the posted address with the words that were also posted, lets see what happens shall we?

Have you read the terms and policies of gmail and see if it states anything about shutting down an account for word based actions? But that is a good idea :D

My gmail account gets plenty of hacker related email and seems fine. I wonder whether bracket is withholding key bits of information.

I never said it was due to hacking, I said it might be. I am still unsure of what caused the problems... No response from google at this time.
