Why i love Gentoo

17 posts in this topic

I am starting this thread as a place where people that like Gentoo can post things they like about it. if anyone decides that this is a place for a distro war they are mistaken. if you are a redhat guy or a debian guy, go start a thread about how great your distro is. this is only a thread for positive things about Gentoo.

I love Portage.

Portage is an awesome program that handles all the dependency problems that come with installing stuff on linux. This program alone makes Gentoo my choice of distros.

For example if i want to install elinks on my laptop, all i have to type is

"emerge elinks" and in a few moments elinks is installed. I didnt have to go to a website and find the latest version, download it, and find a dependency that it just has to have. Also I get to compile it myself so that I know it is optimized for my system. I control the OS, it doesn't control me.

Dont forget the gentoo forums. Portage is awsome but without all the great people at the gentoo forums I could be lost on some things. If it was not for Gentoo and portage I may have given up on linux because I could not stand dependency hell and bad documentaion.

i must say, the gentoo project kicks ass, i dont run it, im a debian guy, but some of the projects that come out of the gentoo camp are just sexy. like the gensplash project, so much sexier then the old bootsplash that was broken as hell..

gensplash link http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/

portage alone does make gentoo worth it, portage, porthole, the way the startup scripts work, it all just makes me happy :D

Gentoo's init scripts (start, stop, status, sleep, etc. start-stop-daemon)

Portage (source installs, easy, configurable, USE flags)

Community (#gentoo, GWN, Gentoo Forums)

Install (Source, configurable, no bulk)

Gentoo is love.

I love how you edit the run levels

rc-update add gdm default

the rc-update and other rc-* commands are so UBER

I also love the documentation/tips section of the gentoo forums they have some really cool threads in there

BTW they (the developers of gentoo) are working on getting gentoo to be able to allow you to select either the linux kernels or BSD kernel when you install or both and boot to which ever one you feel like. Also they changed the name from Gentoo Linux just To Gentoo.

Gentoo was the first distro to work on the minimac and they now have gentoo protage for solaris and OSX too

I like having recent versions of software available that are stable. The updated selection of developer tools alone is worth the install.

I need to sitdown and install gentoo. I have heard so many good things about it. Just need a machine I can do it with (this weekend I am going to buy a new hd or 3) Then I will have a machine to put gentoo on.

Although (and I know I will get killed after saying this)

I have always liked SuSE....

mm i did say porgtage twice didnt i :D well when i was new to using the "emerge" command i used "porthole" (emerge front end) to get me used to it, it was a great stepping stone, and as for the startup scripts rc-update add XXXX default/boot is great for setting things at different run levels (at least i think thats what it does ;p) not to mention "ufed" to set your USE flags in your make.conf file :D

I ran Gentoo for about a year and a half, then decided to take all of my systems over to Mandrake. I thought that I'd like the quick recovery if I needed to reinstall my systems.

The thing that I forgot, thought, was that I NEVER reinstalled when I had Gentoo on my systems. I am back now, and I must say that the forums is what brought me back, but the lack of a need to ever reinstall is keeping me for good this time!
