replace patterns in text files

Simple question: does anyone know if there is a grep-like utility with which you can replace patterns in a file?

i belive what you are looking for is "xargs" its pretty cool, i dont use it too much although.

Most advanced text editor in linux, will accept regex in the replace or find options.

such as VIM, EMAC or KATE

thanks. xargs and sed are both very cool, and as a pico man, the flag is -r (thanks for that suggestion prof) btw. Interesting to see how differently people approach a relatively simple task.
