  2. that seems much easier - i tried running gparted inside ubuntu but wouldn't allow anything in my linux partition... you guys sure i can resize without problem with gparted from live cd? That depends on how your partitions are laid out. Run fdisk -l (sudo fdisk -l if you are not logged in as root) and post the output. And as always -- backup backup backup. If you trashed your hard drive and had to reformat would you be able to retrieve your data?
  3. If your workstations are not connected to a domain and the username/password on the remote machine is different than the local machine ; you will need to establish a connection to the remote machine first, enter the username/password, and then run the shutdown command. Example: From the local machine 1. Go to start -> run 2. Type \\remotemachine\ 3. You will be prompted for a username and password 4. Now you will be able to run "shutdown -m \\remotemachine -s -t 3"
  4. First check the ownership of the folder The owner of the folder should be the user running apache. Here's an example: ============================================================== root@localhost:~$ ls -l /var/www/html total 8 -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 177 2010-03-03 19:46 index.html -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data www-data 21 2010-03-03 20:10 test.phpapache root@localhost:~$ ps aux |grep apache www-data 2016 0.0 0.7 33732 3696 ? S 08:08 0:00 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start ============================================================== www-data is the user and group
  5. I think they can get you for tampering/destruction of evidence
  6. Unless things have changed, you can sign up for gsx, but you have to be allowed priveleges in order to actually use it. I use to work for an apple authorized company. I was able to create an apple ID, but the company had to assign me as a apple engineer under their account before I could pull information from gsx.
  7. My 2 cents: It's always easier to find a tool for a job, than a job for a tool. Instead of picking a language, pick a project. I always find it easier to learn a language, technology, etc when you have a purpose/goal. When I first started as a network/sys admin I needed to automate tasks. So, I learned bash and perl. When I needed a web interface to a few sql servers, I learned php. As a windows admin, I learned VBscript and VB.net to interact with Active Directory, XP clients, and exchange servers. A good example would be keeping an inventory of your movies. You need a database that holds items like title, Year it was made, actors. Then you need a way to put data in and display data. So you can write a php/html page to input data, and one to display data.
  8. If mysql was configured using the --with-openssl option, I don't believe that exploit will work. More information about yaSSL and openSSL http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/secure-using-ssl.html
  9. Cool, Thanks. If you are in the area, stop on by
  10. did anyone add this to our calendar? I tried adding it, does it require an approval by an admin? Just wondering. Thanks for the heads up.

  13. If you don't type the '&', when you closed the terminal it would kill the firefox process
  14. Anytime I have this request I say : 1. Connecting through vpn adds a second layer of encryption and a second layer of authentication. (First connect to VPN then connect to RDP). 2. Our network policy only allows required ports to be open from outside in. RDP does not fall under this category. It can be accessed through vpn so there is no reason to open the port. If you don't like it, talk to my boss :-) Btw, why does he want rdp open? Do y'all have split tunneling turned off? It's safer to turn off split tunneling but a real pain for end users (and even worse for people like us that have to support them.)
  15. And is it a "router" or just a "modem". a
